Us May Be Pushing Back From Democracy

Bush seems to be not as enthusiastic as in the past.

On a past forum I agrued that a coup may be brewing in Iraq and th US would be the leader. That what is needed is a govt stronger in response to the violence.

Thoughts?

The root of the problem isn't the style of government, but the philosophy of the people. If the people's will is opposed to that of the West, then no matter what style of government that will is going to be expressed in it. If it is not then you quite possibly have an even more dangerous situation because of instability of the state.

A free and fair election, as much as possible in Iraq, does not guarantee democracy and it can not be imposed by a force of arms. Pretty much defeats the concept. If the people's attitude is such that they do not want democracy, who are we to demand it?

setting clear goals for the aceheiving of human rights, and in concert with other peoples around the world surely must be the main concern of all powers.
if not, chaos would reign - I fear.

the difficulty is as you suggest -- if a major power attempts to force these forms of very fragile rights and freedoms - in the process what happens is the truncation of those rights.

I will be the first to say what will stop the violence! A strong heavy handed leader--will not be pretty, but the violence against Iraqis would be stopped.
