GATES CONFIRMATION HEARING

Gates, the 63-year-old president of Texas A&M University, was nominated November 8 to replace outgoing Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld.

Testifying before the committee for hours, he told members the United States was not winning the war in Iraq and that the U.S. course there "over the next year or two" would shape the entire Middle East.

I listened to some of the proceedings and he said something like we are not winning the war, but neither are we losing the war.

Now that is good political rhetoric--God I love these guys!

His opinion on the violence in Iraq and its neighbors.

Gates: Attacking Iran Would ‘Worsen The Violence In Iraq And Lead To Greater American Casualties’

The Pentagon is actively planning, and the administration is reportedly considering, a preemptive strike on Iran. Today, Defense Secretary nominee Robert Gates was asked about his views on attacking Iran. Gates said “the consequences of a military conflict with Iran could be quite dramatic” and agreed it would “worsen the violence in Iraq and lead to greater American casualties.

Read and watch.

So we won't attack Iran unless our vital interests are threatened.

Who defines vital interests?

More word games.

One thing I heard that was pretty funny, if not misleading, is that they asked him if we were winning in Iraq, and he said, "no, we are not winning or losing." So, after hearing him say that, I get to hear ABC news breaks on the radio say "When asked point blank if we were winning in Iraq, Gates' blunt response?: (sound clip of Gates) No!" Ha ha ha, love that media.

The spin doctors have a new cause.

It seems the media is trying to define the word "no".

The Iran question is covered on a new thread.

Definition? Who has the podium.

I think CNN or FOX needs a "political Rhetoric" expert and we will get a well reheresed response.
