God Talks to Rumsfeld
Though that's not what the article says exactly, why aren't our leaders more mindful of how their words might be translated into other languages? No wonder it comes off as a religious war on both sides.
Quote:
MIAMI (AFP) - The top US general defended the leadership of Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, saying it is inspired by God.
"He leads in a way that the good Lord tells him is best for our country," said Marine General Peter Pace, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

I can understand using religion as a moral code to guide your public and private actions. I just think it's foolish to mention it in the context of a war that is supposed to be a war of liberation from and annihilation of "Islamofascists". It can only encourage and propogate their view that it is a holy war.

Rummy is not the only one God talks to--Shays, R-PA (?) says that we are doing the Lord's work in Iraq. I agree the more statements like these can only enforce the belief that the US is on a "New Crusade".

What's wrong with talking to God? If they (the people you are talking about) were making fun of the terrorists that we are fighting, the media would be up one side and down the other on them for doing that.

Nothing's wrong with talking to God. I think it's just stupid to say so. We're supposedly a secular government. On the plus side, now we can infer how General Pace views this war (good vs. evil).
Do you feel that it is a holy war then? Does this signify that the rapture is at hand, the dead shall soon walk the Earth and Jesus will come again?

I could remember back. When ever anyone talked to God and heard voices from God. They were sent to the Nut house.

Why? I talk to Him everyday. I ask for guidance, strength and wisdom to run my company. Is it stupid to say that?

It is if you are in charge of prosecuting a war of "liberation" from oppressive religious fundamentalists. It only gives them more ammo.
Your company does not represent the Executive branch of the government, so you can say whatever you want. Good for you for being honest. Bad for General Pace for being a little too honest. I know that sounds contradictory. Like I said, at least we know where he stands. Reducing this conflict to a battle of good vs. evil is not fair to our soldiers who are in harm's way. He might as well have said, "Bring 'em on".

Do you even remotely see how much of a double standard that looks?

LOL yeah, I do. It makes sense to me, though. I just feel it (restrictions on free speech) comes with the territory if you're going to have a job in the top brass in the military or public office.
