Being able to deceive your political enemies and cause them to not take you seriously is a very good skill to have, if that is your intended route.

It's like the ending of The Odyssey. By dressing as a beggar Odysseus is able to make it into his palace without raising suspicions, where he is able to wreck havoc. Had he walked in as he was, he would have been killed by the many suitors, but by dressing as a beggar he was able to kill them all in a surprise attack.

Sometimes allowing others to think less of you is the better route to go to achieve your goals.

Generally I laugh at Bush rather then with him however I will give hi props for his two jabs against Obama and Clinton assuming they were his own.

I support his approval of the ban on partial birth abortion.

I also support his decision to invade Afghanistan. In retrospect, invading Iraq wasn't a great idea, but I support his decision to stay until we've finished what we started.

Earth to Bartholomew. He's the President of the United States. He has an entire staff of speech writers. Trust me, he didn't "spend the two night previous thinking it up" [sic]. The mayor of a small town may have, not the most powerful man on the planet.

Geeze.

Yeah, a little mistake there. Only hundred thousand or so dead and half a trillion wasted. But he meant well.

Retaliating against the nation that harbored the terrorists was a no-brainer. Even idiot-boy couldn't get that one wrong. Invading Afghanistan was such an obvious move that most of the entire world supported us, even some Arab nations.

But he didn't carry out the mission in Afghanistan, did he? By diverting our attention from Afghanistan to Iraq, which had exactly NOTHING to do with 9/11, we now stand to lose both wars. He managed to turn world opinion against us, which was quite a trick considering the amount of support we had right after the attack. All that goodwill went to hell in a cesspool of torture and lies and incompetence.

What an incompetent loser.

I think your over thinking things hear. People in the public eye, especially politicians do not intentionally act foolish. Bush did not behave in the same manner he does now when he was Governor of Texas. Even still being deceptive only makes you a good politician, not necessarily a good president.

Oh. So you're saying that now that no one takes him seriously as a leader or as Commander in Chief or as an economic planner, now he's going to drop his disguise and turn 7 years of disaster into a great triumph?

He's certainly accomplished the first part of the plan. He's definitely got us convinced he's a complete loser. So now for the hard part. Using that well-earned total lack of trust and disillusionment to pull the rabbit out of the hat.

Great. We're all waiting...

2. The 6 months following 9/11 were handled very well. He helped bring everyone together and led the charge for revenge. This was ended by the his advisers pushing him towards war with Iraq.

3. 2007 was a big success for Bush. He has shown strength of Character, and was able to single handedly keep the Democrats at bay. Skillful use of the veto, and threatening, he was able to exhibit strong leadership. Too bad he was not able to do this when his own party was in control.

4. The 2003 tax cuts were an excellent idea. They were probably a strong force in helping bring us out of the recession that he had inherited upon taking office. Downsides being Congress did not reel in its spending to adjust for the tax cuts, leading us into huge debt, and the Federal Reserve drove us to another recession with too loose credit policies.

5. He is a deceptively good public speaker. While people may think that he sounds foolish, his style has allowed him to rise to the Presidency, and garner the votes of millions who identify with him. Because he does not speak like a classical orator, he is consistently "misunderestimated". Underestimating Bush is done at ones own peril, as he is quite shrewd. Because of this, he can do things that could not be done if his enemies thought highly of him.

Although I respect politicking, and the power of rhetoric. Perhaps the average person would not look so kindly on the skills of manipulation as I do.
I agree to just about all of this.....

1. He has a backbone of steel...He does what he thinks is best for the nation....no matter how unpopular.....He does not raise a finger to see which way the wind is blowing.....A man of character.....

And I think that history will vindicate him.....and will be kind to him....In view of the threats coming from the Middle East and in particular Iran, WE MUST HAVE A PRESENCE IN THE MIDDLE EAST for a long time.....Our presence will keep the Middle East from exploding into chaos....Just as our presence in Europe kept the USSR from over running the continent, and our presence in Japan and S. Korea has kept the Chinese from overrunning that whole part of the world....

2. His character......I can not remember a president in my lifetime who has had to endure the vile and mostly wrong things that have been said about him, He has been vilified in the worst kind of way.....Yet through it all, he has maintained his dignity.....I can not recall him ever responding with ugly
names calling or comments about any of his detractors....He has almost always brushed it off with some kind of comment to the effect that that is what living in a free country enables people to do....

3. The stock market is at historical highs, and the unemployment rates is at historical lows.....and have been through his whole presidency....And no one gives him credit for that...

4. He must be doing something right....There has not been an attach against
the US anywhere in the world (except in Iraq and Afghanistan) since 9/11.....Consider that the first bombing of the Twin towers, (1993), the bombing of 2 US embassies in Africa, the bombing of the military barracks in Saudia Arabis, the bombing of the Cole.....all happened during the Clinton presidency.....and each one of those events were acts of war against the US....And our lack of response to those events contributed to the attack on 9/11.....They miscalculated....George Bush is no Bill Clinton.....

Oh...and Saddam Hussein spent the entire time Bill Clinton was in office shooting at our planes flying over the No Fly Zone....with impunity....Even Saddam miscalculated George Bush....he thought Bush was bluffing and would just lob some cruise missiles into Bagdad, like Clinton had done.....He said so while he was in captivity......

Also, I have noticed how well he responds to reporters' questions during news conferences.....he always has a response backed up by facts....
He knows what he is talking about..... As his mother says about him....He is dumb like a fox....

And I agree with you regarding 2007.....He has blocked the Dems at every turn.....and they are the ones who have looked just plain incompetent, foolish, mean and vindictive....

And he has shown his sense of humor on numerous occassions.....He is a funny guy....

I think he has been a good president....and I think history will be kind to him...

And I think if the Dems win in Novemeber....especially if BO wins...(God forbid) .we will look back on the Bush years as the good old days....

First, I don't know where the hell you got the idea that the president is the economic planner of the nation. In reality, the President has very little effect on the economy. His biggest impact is the ability to veto some legislation that could have some effect on the economy. He is no economic planner, nor should the President ever be. Free markets are far more effective than central planned economies.

Second, you don't take him seriously at your own harm. His decisions have as much impact as any other President before him.

Third, the story was to illustrate that sometimes you want to be underestimated. I clearly summarized that in the final sentence. He has been able to do quite a few things because of this, namely single handedly defeat the Democratic Congress in 2007. Considering how often they call him stupid, he sure has displayed a lot of competence in stomping on the Congress.

I'm no fan of Bush, but the man isn't stupid. He has accomplished a whole lot as President (Whether we agree with the goals of those or not is a different subject), and gets a worse reputation than he deserves. His biggest follies as President is listening to bad advice and invading Iraq, and not using the Veto pen enough. Other than those major missteps, he's just another mediocre President.

That's pretty much a good summation of Bush from my point of view too.
He was never presidential material. A maximum example of the Peter Principle.
