Is US Ready For A Black Pres?
An interesting point of view from Rice.
WASHINGTON (AP)
America is ready to elect a black president, says Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.
The nation’s highest-ranking black government official, Rice has said repeatedly she will not run for president despite high popularity ratings and measurable support in opinion polls.
“Yes, I think a black person can be elected president,” Rice said in an Associated Press interview Thursday

Now let the opinions begin! LOL

I thought they were ready when Powell was mentioned.
Although Obama seems to be a popular choice I think it is one election too soon for him.
I think he has a good chance considering his early support.

Rice won't run, IMO. She is too strongly linked to Bush. If she distances herself from him she will look like an opportunistic turncoat to her president and if she sticks with him his abysmally low popularity will rub off on her. Besides, she wouldn't get much support from anyone but the right wingers.
Obama seems to be considered a contender ONLY because he's black. Of course, when you have NO track record to speak of there isn't much the other side can use against you.

I think America would vote for a moderate right-wing black. But a left-wing black? I don't think so. People would get angry about positive discrimination.

I'm a little worried that people might vote for a black person just because he is a black person, and you know, its like totally 2006, instead of taking policy into account. Personally from what I've been hearing about his stances, Obama is a little too far left for me.I can just see us getting into a trend where eventually we're voting people in just too look "cool" and enlightened and open minded. If we are dead set on electing a black person, or a woman, or a whatever, I just hope we have the good sense to make sure they are qualified and balanced. I think that Obama is a good guy, but I would much rather have someone that is closer to middle of the road.

I'd rather see someone run for the Senate with the intention of SERVING in the Senate and not just using that position as a launching pad for a presidential campaign.
That's what I'D rather see.

I do not think in my area anyone would help elect a black pres. Why? Most are still running scared from the civil rights era.

Colin Powell rocks, he should have ran in 2000, he would have crushed Bush and Gore and he should run in 2008, he'll definantly most likely get my vote.

However, if it's going to be a left-wing black, then I think there will be some discrimination against him, as we can see from Harold Ford, a cultural conservative Democrat who is actually very light skinned. Yet the race factor defeated him anyway.

I remember in my middle school geography book,it said: most conservative white American 's attitude is: I am not racist, but please don't let African-American live with us.
so i think the same will happen in the General election.
