need some computer advice...

does anyone know if dell.com does black friday or cyber monday (ie have coupon codes)?

i'm looking into upgrading my computer, with a budget of around $600-$750. i don't need a monitor or a sound system (have those already).

any suggestions, recommendations? hp or dell? good deals? ways to customize? (i'd like to get 2 GB on memory, for example)

much thanks!

upgrading your computer or buying a new one?

I built this one from scratch at Geeks.com for about $600 a year and a half ago. 1GB memory. That was no monitor or sound card, either.

If you're going to buy a brand name, I would take Dell over HP in a second. I own a couple of Gateways, and have always had good luck with them, personally (however, at this point in my life, if I wanted a new computer and had to buy one, I would build my own). At work, I deal with Dell, HP/Compaq, and a few custom manufacturers. Dell tends to requisition the more reliable hardware, but their customer service is terrible. If you're a savvy user, go with them - if you rely a lot on customer service, go elsewhere.

As for your upgrade, what do you have now (processor(s), memory, etc)? What kind of machine do you have? What are you looking to do with it?

I'm with the Dr. on this one. I prefer to build them from scratch, but if I was going to get a brand name, it would probably be Dell.

i have an athlon 1900 right now, 1.91 GHz, 512 MB. however, my hard drive died on me, and for the costs of getting a new HD and buying windows, i might as well plunk down a coupla hundred dollars more and get a brand new machine.

right now i'm looking at the dimension E520, maybe upgrading processor and memory (to 2 GB). i'm especially tempted by dell here, because if the comp is $999 and above, there's a deal on for 25% off.

i aim to do some photo editing, maybe some light video editing, word processing, internet, and if my girlfriend doesn't catch me, some games on the side.
