I participate on an educational board and this has produced a hot debate.
on one side, those in favor of Affirmative Action (AA) - even to the detriment of certain ethnicities (namely Asians) who now face what is deemed a "bamboo ceiling" - i.e. a higher standard for Asians in the admissions process at the elite private universities (e.g. the Ivies - Harvard/Princeton/Yale/Brown/Dartmouth/Columbia/Cornell/UPenn ... Stanford, MIT, etc.)
those who favor abolishing AA in favor of a 100% merit based system - those who argue against this will cite a devastating effect for certain underrepresented minorities (URMs) such as Blacks and Hispanics - however, others (e.g. Asians) would likely find this system more egalitarian.
that's not to mention the bulk of the Caucasian population - where to they fit into this argument?
WEB, I'd love to get your insights on this in particular, since you can side with both sides in this argument (Asian / Black). What are your thoughts and why?
