For a bit of fun she got involved in a voluntary Theatre group working on a production for Halloween.
At the end of a rehearsal she announced to an astounded group
" I'm gagging for a ***!"
Everyones jaws dropped open in surprize, especially the rather "nice" chap who was the director.
Emily noticing the stunned silence had to explain she was in need of a cigarette.

Hey, thats like we use to say here. The common language is what divides us most from the Germans...

After having lived in Illinois for 7 years and then returning, I realized just how true that statement is. Only in a state like Illinois or Indiana do people "sweep" the carpet.

Yeah, me too (with Chicago). I lived there throughout most of primary and all of middle school. I came back in high school. Seriously, some of the phrases of the south I forgot entirely or rarely used once I lived up there for a year or so. For instance, I completely forgot the use of "fixin to" do something. I have never lost "y'all" though. My accent changed alot though, and people still ask me if I'm from out of state, though I've been back in Texas for a while now.
What part of Chicago are you from originally? I lived in Waukegan for a couple of years and then we moved to South Chicago to Blue Island.

Slarti, where did you learn English (just curious)? In school or in life? If school, how much were you required to take?

EDIT:
EHM, sorry I manipulated your post. Really not on purpose
