Yeah, I think letting your kids surf around unmonitored is about the same as leaving them alone in the most dangerous part of town. It's just irresponsible. They'll have access and be exposed to that shit soon enough. The internet just isn't a place for undeveloped, immature minds.

I have Spybot, which seems to work well. This is one reason why we have the computer in the middle of the living room- I can see from the couch what's on the screen. I don't have a survellance program, but then, neither kid has given me cause to want one. They're both open enough about what they are doing (in life in general) that I'm not afraid. In fact, with the oldest, I hear maybe more detail than I always want, about who said what to whom, and which girls who were friends last week are fighting now... it makes my head spin sometimes.
but, yes, Coyote, if I were in your situation, I'd get one. I'm with you on the benefit of the doubt, but once they violate that trust it takes a long time to earn it back.

Representing the teenagers out there, I gotta say that I am quite the advantage over my parents. I have a much MUCH larger knowledge of computers than them to the point where I basically am capable of controlling it. My parents know that I occasionally look at porn. The conversations I have with my friends are private (though I have logs of them for personal use). The relationship I have with people I play video games isn't inquired into much, though truthfully I have some of their phone numbers (which I only have used for the purposes of 3 pranks) and we're pretty reciprocal as far as knowledge of each other's lives goes. However, I am very discerning and careful on the internet (except for the occasional slip up due to a combination of curiousity and confidence in my own technical skills, which hasn't gotten me in too much trouble yet).
WHY!?
I am invested in my computer. It is not only my main form of entertainment (due to the fact that I live in a rather secluded neighborhood with no friends nearby), but I purchased it. I purchased it in pieces actually, and put them together. I installed all the software. This isn't to say I don't take risks. I pirate, I tweak (overclocking), and I transport it to LAN parties. I think my parents have a general grasp of this, but not in depth. However, they trust me because I know what I'm doing and this computer is mine, built on my own finances.
I'm guessing the 4.21 GPA, instruments and sports I play, and the clubs I've joined help though.

Thanks for your response! I have the advantage over my son in technical skills. I too bought this computer and assembled it from parts.
If my own kid had even a 3.0, I wouldn't be as concerned about how much time he spends on the infernal machine. I personally spend about 5 times as much time on this thing as he does. But that includes my job, which is computers. His job is high school.
You sound like you've got your crap together. If you were my kid that would entitle you to a lot of freedoms.

You say you're 15 right ? Just from your writing skills I have a pretty tough time believing you're honest about your age. I'm sorry, but there are very few 15 year olds that would have worded what you wrote above so clearly and concisely.
How exactly does one get a 4.21 GPA ?

Alright, I found some minor issues with the writing but STILL you do better than most adults. I would have written this:
Representing the teenagers out there, I gotta say that I am quite the advantage over my parents. I have a much MUCH larger knowledge of computers than them to the point where I basically am capable of controlling it.
Like this:
Representing the teenagers out there, I gotta say that I have quite the advantage over my parents. I have way more knowledge of computers than they do, to the point where I'm basically controlling it.
Anyways, I write crappy a lot too when I'm going fast :-)

As long as they are under the age of 18, and you are responsible for them.. all of the time.

I'll be 16 this November. I think my IQ is something in the 140s.
The 4.21 GPA is due to a weighted grade point system where honors courses get a .5 weight and AP classes get a 1 point weight provided you get a B or higher in the class.
As for the grammar mistakes, I've been playing piano for 10 years and using computers for even more, so I typed quite quickly (80 words per minute max) so I am prone to mistakes either from typos or even simply disjoined thoughts.

Well alright. I took one AP course in high school. AP biology. Did you know if you have perfect 20/20 vision you can see paramecium in a clear vial of water ? They're HARD to see, but you can see them bare eyed. Cool stuff. I took the course only because my hobby was (still is) keeping a kind of animal:

I did not know that, but it certainly is an interesting fact. I remember learning about how they move, pretty cool stuff.
