Ygorl- "I got that it seems that many of us seem to beleive that we're entitled to live like kings and will complain when reality fails to deliver that for us."
In my opinion we are entitled to live in any matter which we see fit, so long as we do not hurt others in the process. If that entails trying to improve your quality of life, or "bitch" about the government because they are doing things you do not life, then so be it. You can want more, yet still be grateful for what you have... it is called ambition.

Having a criticism of the United States (as you do) does not equate that you, or I, or anyone thinks each of us should live like a King and will complain when reality fails to deliver that.
I'm sure there are some "prima donna" types out there who think that way, but I would hardly say it's the majority of the people in our country--and certainly isn't anyone who is working hard toward improving their lives or our society.

I agree that it might seem as if he's saying that ALL of us are like that.
In reality, I suspect he's talking about many of our politicians and activists.
Maybe people like US too :-)

I don't think the framers of the Constitution would be pleased if we just bent over and took it from the government. That's not how the nation was set up. However as Mike Gravel said, Americans are getting fatter and dumber. This is definitely an issue. The cause is not weed, television, or bad food. All of those are fine in moderation. As I see it, the cause has to be our society's values. Children become accustomed to a certain life and do become spoiled in American society.
Rather than seeking out an education, from the beginning of our educational career we are encouraged to discover what we want to be. Why? So we can fit into society and make money. That's all that our society boils down to: making money. The more you make, the more successful you are in society's eyes. It should be more complex than that. We need to find a way to value education, and I think that begins and ends with family values.

Everyone has a theory about why so many people - especially those in the media - think America is on the wrong course. Did too many of us watch too much television when we were very young, altering the brain's structure to cause a short attention span ? How about not enough fat in our diets, reducing serotonin levels ? Or did some Americans smoke too much marijuana, causing depression ?
*I'm sure this accounts for SOME. Which we'll dismiss of course.*
All or none of the above may be the culprit, but one thing is certain: We Americans are spoiled.
*No?*
Craig R. Smith, a conservative columnist, makes the case by asking what Americans are so unhappy about. Is it that we have electricity and running water 24 hours a day ? Could it be because more than 95 percent of us have a job ? That we have freedom of speech, press, and religion enjoyed by few other countries in the world ? Or that we see more food in any supermarket than Darfur has seen in a year ?
*These things piss me off. Don't they piss YOU off TOO ? Who is willing to do what needs done to put a stop to these horrors ?*
"The fact is, we are the largest group of ungrateful, spoiled brats the world has ever seen," writes Smith, who tells me that he has received more than 500 e-mails congratulating him on his column. "No wonder the world loves the United States, yet has a great disdain for its citizens. They see us for what we are - the most blessed people in the world who do nothing but complain about what we don't have and what we hate about the country instead of thanking the good Lord we live here."
*Any comments ?*

There is no such thing as complete happiness. Everyone wants more no matter what. Most people think that they will be content if they could only have a little bit more of something that they don't have a lot of. Starving people may look at a fat person and think that they would be happy if they could just be like that person, but the fat person looks at the starving person and thinks if only I could be that skinny. Americans are unhappy because there is still someone who is better off then they are. No one is less happy than another they are just placed in different circumstances.

Mankind will never be satisfied, and will always want to improve. If that was not the case few of us would be around to talk about it.
