Wonderful. Another semi-interesting discussion in politically correct semantics.

Would you prefer an offensive discussion on politically incorrect semantics?

I wasn't there, but I would venture a guess that discrimination occured back in the "cave man" days. Unless you believe the Geiko ads.

I think it's ingrained in human nature. Even children will differentiate (which is different than discrimination) either on gender, likenesses, etc.

We tend to migrate toward that which we can relate to. If we aren't "urban" inclined, we move to the country, and vice-versa. If we enjoy drinking at a bar, we tend to make friends who do the same. If we enjoy going to church, same thing.

There simply will never be complete solidarity.

I am a Somali-American not an African-American. I think I know which part of the second largest continent I am from.

The term 'African-American applies to a person who doesn’t know what part of Africa they are basically from. You will barely hear the term “European American” but you will definitely hear the terms, Irish-American, Italian-American, German-American or Caucasian.

No offense to anyone…..

How does this work if you're not African-ANYTHING? There are a lot of people from places like Jamaica and they are called African-American too.
I don't know if THEY call themselves that, but if you go by color it always seems to end up as African-American in this country.

My Mom's Hispanic, my Pops is half Scottish-American (his father came here from Scotland) and half Polish-American. I don't know what I "am" in that regard (a "Hispaneuro-American"?) other than just an American with a diverse heritage. I find peoples fixations on the titles of themselves to be rather tedious and boring after a while. Most times I just get fed up and say "I'm a human being".

True, most of the blacks from the Caribbean Islands are originally from West Africa.

Yes, I had assumed that as well. However, it wasn't my point in the context of this thread.
I assumed when people say "African-American" they mean a more direct line of descent. If memory serves, scientists say we ALL came from Africa, except some moved North and slowly became White.
