They should have made sure their black friend was in every picture. Then it would have been okay. :P

Racism, or drunken frat boys thinking they're creative and/or funny. I figure they are probably just biding their time until they grow up. When that happens they may turn out not be racist at all.
It is entirely possible they don't really mean insult and are stupid or unthinking enough to believe it's just innocent fun. Like the Mummers, which is an insult to drag queens everywhere.

But then again, it IS in Texas.

As someone who is white and old enough (cough) to watch the fight for civil with the Reverend Dr. Martin Jr., I found this stunt to be utterly tasteless and infantile. I truly am embarassed by these college students, who have no idea of what the fight to secure the rights was all about.

They do not appreciate that people placed their lives on the line so all people could have access to civil rights. I see this "college prank" as nothing but overt racism.

When I recieved my bugles (capt.'s rank), some of the men on my crew had been on the dept. longer than I, and they pushed me by picking a fight with an African-American; race-baiting. It was at that time I had to jump in and stop any fight before a situation got out of hand. When you have control of a crew of 13, with 10 that have to go into a fire 2-by-2, they have to remember that they are "brothers" and teamwork is involved as 2 enter a building, they exit the building. Otherwise, all 10 will go into a fire to look for a missing "brother". I did not suffer fools, and if I saw a hint of it in my firehouse, I made a quick call to my Battalion Chief, and had the troublemaker re-assigned to the busiest firehouse in the county. I had no time for any kind of racist "fun and games" (their term) in a house where all of my men had to appreciate that they were brothers, and every life mattered.

I have been lucky enough to stand on the top step of the Lincoln Memorial where Dr. King stood, which is engraved "I have a dream". I was nothing but a small child when he made that speech, and living on a farm in Wisconsin, I couldn't understand what he meant when he said (paraphrase) "When little white children, will be able to play with little black children". I saw suble racism on the dept., but I made a point of not having any whiff of racism in my firehouse.

Dr. King did not live to "continue his dream", but I'll be damned if I don't allow his dream to live on in me. He inspired us all, and we should live his dream in our hearts, until we take our last breath.

Do you mean the Bullets and Bubbly party, or the Martin Luther King party?

I think that the MLK party was pretty sad. At first I would have thought that maybe they were making a statement about how ridiculous some aspects of black culture have become (rap, gangsta mentalities, etc.) but when I saw the picture of the girl dressed as aunt jamima I figured that the only statement they were making is that they are retarded.

If you have to ask, you will never know.

I find it totally tasteless that young people have no idea of the struggles others went thru only 40+ years ago to gain access to the rights promised to them under the 14th Amendment. And to do this on the day when we honour the courage of Dr. King, and the ultimate sacrafice he made is just unreal to me. I think these kids need some sensitivity classes, to make them aware. I respect the backgrounds and ancestries of all people, and am appalled by both parties.

I live near the Piscataway Indian Nation (The PIN) and outside of Washington, D.C., and I find the name The Washington Redskins as disgusting as they do. We need to build bridges to each community and I was trained in my career that we save everybody; no matter if they are a certain race, religion, gender, party affiliation, etc. When we stand together, we are so much stronger as a nation instead of dividing people, or singling people out.

And as a Caucasian woman, I am disgusted that these fools do no know better at either party.

If it can't be explained, then perhaps it only exists in the minds of those seeking racism where it doesn't exist.
