Adultery Could Mean Life, Court Finds

Adultery could mean life, court finds
That's what the law says in sex-drug case Cox appealed

In a ruling sure to make philandering spouses squirm, Michigan's second-highest court says that anyone involved in an extramarital fling can be prosecuted for first-degree criminal sexual conduct, a felony punishable by up to life in prison.

"We cannot help but question whether the Legislature actually intended the result we reach here today," Judge William Murphy wrote in November for a unanimous Court of Appeals panel, "but we are curtailed by the language of the statute from reaching any other conclusion."

Interesting that having an extra-marital affair has a chance of getting you the same punishment as killing someone. I hope I am not the only one who is disturbed by this and won't be moving to Michigan any time soon.

They will change their minds when they realize they have to lock up half the people in Michigan.

That may be some law on the books, however I'm guessing it's a fluke. Maybe something left over from the Puritan colonial days. I doubt any judge is gonna hand out a sentence like that for cheating.

I didn't know that cheating carried ANY jail time.

I am pretty sure it does not unless it is stated explicitly in a marital agreement. I'm not positive though...

We still have a law down here where a woman can not wear high heels on a sidewalk. Also, it is against the law to spit on a sidewalk. I guess they just loved their sidewalks back then.
