Can you face criminal charges if

you have an unregistered(as well as no license) gun and you use it to protect yourself from a deadly threat/ rape. I know I've asked before probably, but forgot.

There's a serrial killer/ rapist on the loose near a college campus in Reno. I know you can't carry on campus, but I suspect there are some parents suggesting or buying their daughters guns, and doing so 'illegally'. Can anyone blame them?

Don't rely on us for legal advice. Contact a lawyer or someone in the legal profession. I would hate to find out that you acted upon some legal advice I gave without you knowing beans about me.

For the record, I am NOT a lawyer.

why purchase the gun illegally? It's not hard to purchase one legally.

Registration laws related to guns are typically local or state laws. I am unaware of any federal registration requirements except for fully automatic weapons which can only be owned by permit.

years ago, when i was first working as a small-town cop, another old "vet" on the force told me, "It's better to be tried by 12, than carried by 6"

Laws on weapons useage generally varies from state to state. One general rule of thumb though is that if you as the victim feels your life is in immenent danger, you may use deadly force. However, if you are outside the confines of your residence...you must have a concealed weapons permit, or in some states just a "carry permit" in order to have a weapon on you. The rules of immenent danger apply even more so outside your home. Shooting a weapon in a public area carries it's own baggage...for if you miss your intended target...that bullet is going to hit something.

Y'all are missing the point about what was asked. It was asked about carrying a gun illegally on campus. Not if the gun itself was purchased legally or registered.

Can we blame them for urging their daughters for being armed on campus? No I can't.

Can you face criminal charges? Yes.

Is it worth it? That is for you to decide. That is why I said check with legal counsel.

I suspect you can, but if it was as postulated no jury would convict

I don't think any campus should be gun free. Look at what has happened at NIU and Va Tech. The people Iwere sitting ducks. At least the teachers should be allowed. I think this applies to high schools and even middle schools. Everyone has been scared into thinking guns are bad when in all actuallity, it's people. I've been able to handle and shoot guns since I was 7. It just takes common sense. Unfortunately, that seems to be lacking from society these days.

As for your question, they'll probably try to prosecute but I don't see a jury convicting someone for shooting a rapist and murderer in self-defense, whether the gun is legal or not.
