Falwell is Dead, Let's Move On
A. Alexander, May 16th, 2007
As if people should care, the media reported the passing of Jerry Falwell. Who knows, maybe we should care?
Maybe we should celebrate the passing of a mean-spirited, divisive, hateful, and bigoted man the way medieval communities probably rejoiced upon realizing that the black plague had run its course?
My mother always told me not to speak poorly of the dead, but Mister Falwell didn't seem to have any problem demeaning the loss of other people's lives. He certainly didn't shed any tears when Matthew Shepard was murdered for nothing more than being gay. Mister Falwell didn't waste a second in trying to capitalize politically and financially by blaming the attacks of 9/11 on "homah-sec-tuals" and other human beings he didn't like. Interestingly, Mister Falwell never blamed the American culture of greed for anything. Come to think of it, he didn't waste much of his time talking about or taking care of "the least among us".
Mister Falwell was a sick little man who led just enough equally sick people to be considered important by a bunch of sick Republican politicians who in turn, gave Mister Falwell more power than his particular brand of hate-in-the-name-of-Jesus deserved.
On second thought, let's not celebrate the passing of Mister Falwell. Instead, let's just scrape the residue of his fecal-like existence from the bottom of our shoes and move on without giving the hate-filled bigot a second thought.
