During the Viet Nam era, the ease of obtaining conscientious objector status was more dependent upon the draft board one had than one's religion. My brother who did not go to church and was not a member of any pacifist religion was granted his status from a Northern California draft board. A friend of mine whose draftboard was in Texas had to go to court in California to get his status. My ex, who was an Army Nurse in a mash unit in Nam always told me that if they were to try to call her up again, she would go to Canada. In most cases, it takes a lot of courage and determination to refuse to become a trained killer when one is asked to submit. I had the good luck to come of age between the Korean War and Vietnam, and so did my time in the Coast Guard before there was much support for evading the draft. Later, the first Coast Guard boat that served in Nam was shot out of the water with all dead by a US navy pilot

No. I mentioned the incidents because they were personal examples of how religion was invasive in my private life. In the job interview it is now an illegal question. The "let us bow our heads and pray", served no legitimate purpose in the training session; also would have been offensive to Jews, Catholics, Muslims, others, inasmuch as it was a Protestant prayer.

Sorry about changeing the subject but i doubt this question warrents its own thread. I notice there a fair share of "conscientious objectors" on this forum and while i understand most peoples points for not supporting the current war i was wondering how many of you would try to escape serveing in the military if say Chinia invaded the US(supposing it was possible) in an attempt to annex it?

Uh, I'd sit up in my country home with my shotguns and rifles fully loaded and with a couple of handguns with me too. Then when the fuckin Chinese bastards attacked I'd go down swingin. And take a couple hundred w/ me, hopefully. Nah, we'd probably make a Maine minuteman militia to attack those commies. When they decide to come out into the little mini towns that will be pocketed with resistance. People will hide in the woods and pick off them damn commies with their rifles. And will still claim to be Amish and not part of the catolic or protestant church (we have two protestant churches in town).

If the Chinese invaded I would not pretend to be Amish to avoid military service. I would pretend to be Chinese.
