Archbishop With Communist Ties

WARSAW, POLAND - A national drama that embarrassed the Roman Catholic Church and roused Cold War memories ended in a spectacle Sunday when the new archbishop of Warsaw resigned before his Inauguration Mass after admitting that he collaborated with Communist secret police decades ago.

The Vatican quickly accepted the resignation of the Most Rev. Stanislaw Wielgus, who waited until hours before the ceremony in St. John's Cathedral before capitulating to public pressure to step down.

What are your thoughts on this story? Should he step down?

I read quite some editorials on that now. Most focus their criticism on the pope himself, calling the affair a "minor fauxpas" after his Regensburg speech about Mohammed, and claim that the almost fundamentalist and at least very conservative positions of bishop Wielgus were more important to pope Benedict than his past. Some also claim that the old pope John Paul II who was an outspoken enemy of the communist regime and made among the most important contributions to bring it down would never have tolareted a guy like this bishop in such a position.

Christianity is about repentance, atonement and redemption. If he collaberated with the Commies, then realised he'd done wrong and stopped, and worked against them, fine. If he worked with them right up until they were overthrown, and kept all the money (or whatever) they gave him, he should be stripped of whatever ecclesiastical rank (I presume Bishop) he already has.

That is true, but for me, and I do have flaws as we all do, I would take whatever punishment they offer before I would rollover on anyone. I think it is a matter of character.
