Those who have no social way of coping with the nastiness of society and day-to-day survival require religion to stave off the temptation of suicide. Our natural tendency for fear of everything is genetic, so religion or spirituality helps us cope with the real and imagined fears. It is a natural part of everyday life as a human being, but it is highly vulnerable to manipulation. Those who are too lazy to be concerned about their spiritual health tend to allow those whose fear trends towards manipulating others. This has a tendency to spiral out of control into holy wars and societal bigotry, as history bores the scars of human suffering. Clever, scared witless tiny people tend to seek to control others in order to prevent being ostracized for being cowardly. It is a poor way to cope, because it suppresses the other need in our lives for trust in others and within ourselves.
