World War II comes to mind. Even though we were hands off for some of it, after the Japanese attacked us we went in. The Japanese were 1/3 of the "Axis" powers and another third, Hitler's Germany made it pretty clear we were ALL in danger.
And considering what Hitler was responsible for, ANY argument against war just falls flat.
Many of the other notable wars were for territory and such, and may fall a little closer to your way of thinking, but when an avowed enemy wants to kill and/or enslave you and your entire country you must consider war as a justifiable response.
War is difficult to justify in many cases, but when you are attacked first all bets are off. It has to be judges on a case by case basis, and is some cases, you either go to war or you die.
