The first 20- year old- whiskey in the muslim world

Right besides the private house of a most wanted person for certain muslim radicals, pakistani "president" and military ruler Pervez Musharraf, a more than 150 years old brewery is now trying something new. It is the first distillation of a 20- year- old Whiskey by one of the most successful producers of alcoholic drinks in the muslim world.........

Why?? Muslims are not allowed to drink. Does the religion not prohibit the brewing of alcohol also? It definitely should, we don't need any competition. The Japanese are already in on it and have been brewing whisky for some years. Although quality is the most important thing and the distinguishing factor...

Some Muslims drink, some don't. The Quran prohibits the drinking of wine: Some Muslims interpret this as meaning no alchahol, some do not. In most Arab countries there is virtually no alchahol, but in the Central Asian states it's much more common. I don't really know how common it is in Pakistan.

Yes, the item Voland posted goes into the alcohol thing in depth.

In many predominantly muslim countries christian or other minorities are allowed to produce , import and sell alcohol, like in Jordan or Egypt.
( i once awoke with a horrible hangover in Amman (Jordan) after a (muslim) wedding party. And it didn´t come from drinking tea with sugar)
Relatively secular countries like Syria or Lebanon more or less consider it your own business, if you want to live according to islamic rules or not.
And the Shiraz wine- grape has its name from the iranian city of Schiras, where it was cultivated for the first time.
Iranian national poet Hafis ( a Coran teacher by profession) raises many glasses of wine in his poems , also to the prophet , but hasn´t been banned from the schoolbooks yet.

It is fairly common for young people in large cities like Karachi to drink alcohol, according to Pakistani friends of mine.

In Dubai it is freely available to tourists and in Turkish holiday resorts beer is sold in vending machines in the street.

It appears that when it comes to tourism money is often the greater god.

But I agree with Viv about the whisky thing. To achieve that distinuishing quality it must be brewed upwind of Nessie's breath!
