Thumbs down Ironic situation of Gordon Brown (and something stinks) !!

Here is a funny thing, how come in the UK, where democracy is shoved down everyone's throats, can it be possible for Gordon Brown to be simply manouveured into the Prime Ministers position, when only two years before the uk population elected Tony Blair into power, people can argue that they elected "The Labour Party", but when it comes to general elections, it is the leader that pulls the votes !!!!

So Gordon Brown, who, if entering a general election now, would not, in my opinion, win a general election, is going to be our prime minister by default, has suddenly got a strong contender in John Reid, who, has a lot about him, and I am not a labour voter. So just as it appears that John Reid is getting some steam behind him, in noteriety, all of a sudden he is being made out to be a crap home seceratary, judges are having a go left right and centre, the issues at hand are not of John Reids making surely ??? he's only been in the job 5 minutes, and Gordon Brown says nothing, doesn't seem to have an opinion, is not supprting John Reid, what does that say !!! It stinks to me !!

Hi chgs,

Welcome to the forum. I'm an American and I don't know the intricacies of European politics. However, I guess that is the parliamentary institutions work. The party elected to power gets to control who is Prime Minister. That is how the law and Constitution in the UK works, right?

I presume you are from the UK.

Our country does not have a seperated executive and legislature, you vote for parties, and the leader of that party is PM. Major and Callaghan both became PM without a general election, and I think Macmillan did too.
Secondly, a lot of the things Reid is being attakced over are not his fault, but it is just because the government is sinking, the press will go for anything.
Oh, and there is no way John Reid can challenge Brown in the leadership election. The other John (I forget his second name), the lefty one, will probably get far more votes than Reid in a conteston. Reid has few friends among MPs, doesn't have TU support, and is unpopular among the membership.
As to whether Brown is behind it all, the word around whitehall is that he's actually very worried about all this, because he knows that his real challenge is not to gain the Labour leadership but to win a general election against Cameron.
