That is an odd way to observes us. Just from a scientific point of view, they would watch us from afar, like from orbit for a long time to start with. Than if they viewed the planet as safe, and us as no threat (which can't be because they think we're peaceful), they might come to the surface and observe us on an individual basis. But if they had the ability or technology to disguise thier appearence, they would likely take the form of a pigeon or squiral, something where they can stare and watch without any risk.

It would really suck if one of them got mugged of their space keys, or if they defended themselves in an extraterrastial way, they might give themselves away.

Think about it. How's the best way to learn about another culture. You go and live among them. At first you are a stranger, quaint, someone people talk about and they laugh at the way you speak but once you've been there for awhile, the novelty wears off. So how do you know that your odd-looking new neighbour, who claims to come from some far-off country and speaks with a strange accents, isn't actually an alien from another planet. Maybe they evolved the same way we did, aliens don't necessarily have to have green heads and pointy ears.

I don't believe that they look the "hollywood" image, but I highly doubt that they will look that closely to us without assistance.

But, to observe, they would take the same tactics as spying, being a bird or a bug, would make it easier to observe a family at dinner or the political system, without drawing attention to yourself. They would come to learn, not just to live. There are just much better, safer ways for the aliens to study us than to pretend to be one of us.

You don't think that some of those Hollywood types aren't actually aliens?

Seriously though I don't know what I think. Maybe it is arrogant to believe that this is the only planet that happened to breed the various species that it did. There must be others like us. They probably wonder whether we're out there too.

I like to tell people that I think that we are actually a brillantly programed computer game with AI so grand that we think we're real, and some little 8 year old boy is playing the game (like SIMS in the future). And every now an again the little kid longs on and disturbs our little world.

If you follow string theory, they believe that our universe goes into over 12 dimentions, the deepest being a "brain," a flat membrain and floats around "holding the information" of our world (sounds like a CD to me) and the big bang accured when two brains touched.

hmmm????
