The product of Westrom’s efforts is realized in the AR-24 and AR-24K pistols. Both are 9 mm double-action, short-recoil, semi-automatic handguns. The AR-24 is a full-size defensive sidearm with a 4.67" barrel and a 15-round, double-column magazine. The AR-24K is a compact version with a shorter 3.8" barrel. The abbreviated grip frame accommodates a 13-round, double-column magazine. Sarsilmaz, a Turkish firm with a 120-year history of building sporting and military firearms, makes both guns for ArmaLite.
For the past few years, Sarsilmaz has been marketing ArmaLite’s guns, including the AR-10, -30, and -50, to the Turkish Ministry of Defense. Recently, Sarsilmaz signed an agreement with Colt (that is currently pending government approval) to build the M4 at its facility. About two years ago, Westrom visited the Sarsilmaz factory and was surprised to discover that the plant was ISO 9000 registered and filled with precision CNC machinery from Okuma Howa. Secondary work at the plant is performed on machines of German and Italian origin.
The plant is far more complete than any he had seen. Last summer, Westrom showed the Sarsilmaz facility to me and American Rifleman Contributing Editor Charlie Cutshaw, who also writes for Jane’s International Defense Review. Charlie said it was the best plant he’d seen in the world except for one: the Singaporean government plant. Personally, I was impressed with Sarsilmaz’s ability to make its own tooling and gauges. This is something that is increasingly rare in the firearm industry.
