The search for an Earth-like planet orbiting a distant star begins in earnest today with the launch of the first scientific satellite designed to find rocky "exoplanets" beyond our solar system.

Instruments on board the French-made Corot satellite are designed to monitor the tiny perturbations to the light coming from a star caused by the orbit of a relatively small planet similar in size to the Earth.

India wants to join in.

NEW DELHI - India plans to launch a capsule into orbit early next year and bring it back to Earth, an initial step towards an unmanned mission to the moon by 2010, a news report said Sunday.

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), which has said it hopes to send an unmanned probe to the moon in the next three years, has said it needs to test its re-entry and recovery technology, the Indian Express report said.

I'd rather see a concentrated effort where space projects are concerned. I'm surprised there aren't more problems with space junk.

The next thing we will be fighting over is prime realestate on the moon.

If I lived on an earht-like planet, I would do all in my power to keep earthlings from finding. I definately would not want a barbaric race of animals coming to my world.

You beat me to it. I was going to say, considering the shape of OUR Earth, why in hell would we want to find ANOTHER one?

Maybe they just don't know how to answer "I Love Lucy" and Milton Berle shows. That's about all they should be getting in the Alpha Centauri neighborhood.

Maybe they're watching dancing cigarette packs and deciding it's best to keep quiet. I can imagine THEIR version of SETI would be VERY disappointed.

I think they are keeping to themselves because they knew that if we learned of their presence it would be a really big deal, and it would disrupt the next season of American Idol and it is not worth it to them.

Anyone hear that story of the flying disc over O'hare airport.
I saw some clips of a guy who gives lectures with other people from various professions such as the airforce, nasa, and so on where they say that we have made contact and that they are trying to get the government to disclose all that they know. It is called the Disclosure project and they even say that we have communicated with them. They say that they are peaceful. It is wishful thinking IMO, but it would be really cool.d

I still say that if I was from the Dog Star, for instance, and travelled all that way to find intelligent life, I would pass this planet up and continue on my way.
