Time Travel

My apologies. I did a search and time travel came up negative. Since every other board I visit has one of these sooner or later....

I read a SF story about a man who built a TT device.
He set it for one million years in the past, and materialized in interstellar space, having travelled to where Earth had been a million years before. So to return to a past time you'd have to transport the entire solar system with you; but it still wouldn't be the place that was.

If you use a TT device, say to take you back 24 hours; first move to a different spot in the room you were in.
Now there are two of you in that room, looking at each other.
Where did the matter for the extra you come from?

I've never encountered this simple explanation in all of the TT threads I've waded through. Neither have I gotten a credible counter-explanation for it.

Enjoy.

Well, there are two possible ways we could go:

1) If time is like another place, you can add matter to it just like you could add matter to Georgia by taking dirt from Florida and moving it to Georgia.

2) If time cannot be traveled through like you travel through a place, then you can't physically travel back in time. But there is some evidence that you can move information over time. Or do something like Orson Scott Card's Pastwatch, where you can watch what happened in the past like instant replay.

Say that for a month, each day you go back to the first of the month (January).
There are now 32 of you.
One year later, 366 of you.
You decide to make a real nuisance of yourself, and there are eventually thousands of you, from child up to the most recent age at which you "chronoported".
After all you could take the device back yes? Give it to your seven year old self to use?
Sounds like fun. Maybe Elvis has one.

Perhaps it is possible that one can travel back in time, but not to any time prior to the construction of the time machine one is using. Some candidates for time machines, such as wormholes (hypothetical shortcuts through spacetime), imply exactly this. Or it could be that it takes great amounts of energy to travel back in time, and that the further back one wishes to go, the more energy is required. Or perhaps such time travel is in principle physically possible, but never becomes feasible, due to insurmountable technical problems. Somewhat less convincing is the possibility that visitors from the future are among us but simply choose not to reveal themselves. (Some have even said that UFO’s could be such visitors.)

I'd have to do some searching, but I read an article about this time last year talking about a guy who has figured it out on paper, but thinks it will take at least a decade for him to actually do it. I had always thought that you could move forward in time but not backwards. This guy says you can move backwards, but it you change something, when you return to your time it is not changed. Rather, when you made the change a second reality split off and you never see the change in your reality.

Moving forward is relatively simple. Just travel at great speeds. You start to see significant time dilation at a quarter the speed of light, which can be attained simply by mastering the use of antimatter as fuel. A technology which is probably no more than 25-50 years away.

Moving backward in time will require technologies we can't even imagine yet. We don't even know how time works, exactly. We're going to have to know a lot more about physics before we can even make an educated guess as to whether backward time travel is possible.

However, back to the information thing, I'm pretty sure there was an experiment that has been duplicated that involved sending information back about five minutes. That could be the mother of all military advantages if we can make it work. Imagine a patrol in Iraq gets ambushed. After it's over and a few of our soldiers are KIA, we just send a message back 15 minutes to the same squad since now we know exactly where the insurgents are. THey ambush the ambushers.

It would also be a good test of paradox to see how that kind of thing would work. And it's an experiment we might be able to try within a matter of years.

To go back in time you have to reverse entropy.

To reverse one Law of Thermodynamics you'd have to reverse them all.

It's kind of like a man who sets out to fix a sticky door and ends up overthrowing an Empire.

Time exists solely in the eye of the observer - it is a concept, not a reality.

Going for a blast into the real past

My mistake, the experiment hasn't happened yet, and the theory is that they'll be able to transmit data 50 microseconds into the past.

That would invalidate Einstein's theory of General Relativity.
