I for on would like some insight from our arab friends on this outbreak of violence. It doesn't surprise me, Lebanon has been in trouble for some time from my PoV. My PoV is largely ignorant on the secular issues of Lebanon though, enlighten me!

ill insight you of the scenario...
first you need to know the main players of this conflict...

Hizbollah - a shia Militia Political party that managed to make Israel retreat from south of lebanon, and managed to stand against israel's attacks in 2006, and stoped them from entering Lebanon.

Progressive Socialist Party - leader is Walid Jumblatt, also a Druze, which is a minority religion in the Arab world, specially in greater syria region...

Hizbal-Mustaqbal (future)- Sunni liberal Political party , leader Sa'ad hariri (so of Rafik hariri), that has the majority of lebanon. they have played a major role in the Lebanese Civil war.

Amal party - another Shia group supporters of Hizbollah

Lebanese Army - the strongest Armed forces in Lebanon, and it is by far the most trusted, and respected section in Lebanon, due to its Neurtility in conflicts...

to know who's who
Al Jazeera English - Focus - Who's Who In Lebanese Politics

as for the conflict

Mr Jumblatt called to demolish the Hizbollah Communication network, because it is not monitored by the Government. and hizbullah refused, so Jumblatt forced the other sects of the Lebanese political parties to force Hizbullah to do the same, so the goevernment called for Hizbullah to do so...

Nasrallah then speeched the Arab world calling them to not be tricked by the media, for the attacks that will follow his speech are simply self defense, and that the communication network is part of the liberation movement and that he will cutoff any hands that try to affect it.

the next couple of hours nassrallah Militias took over Western Beirut (where the only international Airport in Lebanon is)
and other political groups called this act as a coup against the government.

and gunfire in Beirut sparked, main roads to Syria have been blocked by protestors, and gunmen, lots of people in Beirut are fleeing Beirut to other cities, such as Tripoli (my hometown)...

so this is briefly what the issue is about.

world opinions

Arab League - demands the immidiat Hault of the fighting... and to return to negotiations, and to elect a president in the upcoming elections in 13 May.

USA - called Iran and Syria to stop aiding Hizbullah.

Iran - no comment

EU - same as the US

as for the public Arab Opinion

49% think that this is a start of a Civil war due to the significance of the Airport which is in the Western Part of Beirut.

37% think that it is a political confrontation that wont evolve into a war.

14% think that it is just a temporary conflict that will end soon.

my personaly view is that who ever starts to fire is to blam, eventho i support Hizbullah's existance to protect the country from Israel's random attacks and raids, i dont think its time to take it to the street yet...

and i vote for the last scenario...

as for friends and relatives point of view, especially in Egypt, they find this as an actualy conflict of the American and Iranian Influence in Lebanon, taking the American Iranian Conflict in Lebanon, like the cold war...

which will result in one of them winning, and leaving Lebanon devastated.

Army defeates rebellions trying to take over Khartoum

Darfur rebels fought with Sudanese government troops in a western suburb of the capital on Saturday and said their aim was to take power in Khartoum, but the government said their attack had been defeated.

Heavy gunfire and artillery was heard in Omdurman, across the River Nile from the heart of Khartoum, capital of Africa's biggest country. Helicopters and armored vehicles headed for the fighting and an overnight curfew was declared.

Gaza-Egypt border to open for 3 days: Hamas

The main border crossing between the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip and Egypt will be opened for three days starting on Saturday under a deal between the Islamist group and Cairo, a Hamas official said on Thursday.

Hamas official Ayman Taha said sick Gazans would be allowed to cross into Egypt on Saturday. Palestinians holding Egyptian and other foreign passports will be allowed to leave the coastal territory on Sunday and Monday, Taha added.

Egyptian security sources said Egypt had agreed in principle to open the border for three days to allow the wounded to cross into Egypt for treatment and to allow Egyptians in Gaza to return.

Iraq’s Sadr strikes deal to end Baghdad fighting

The movement of Shiite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr said on Saturday it had struck a deal with the Iraqi government to end fighting in its Baghdad stronghold of Sadr City, after overnight clashes killed 13 people there.
Sheikh Salah al-Obeidi, the spokesman for the cleric's office in the central shrine city of Najaf, said the deal will be effective from Sunday.
"We will stop the fire, stop displaying arms in public and open all the roads leading to Sadr City," Obeidi told AFP.
"This agreement will be executed from tomorrow. The Sadr movement has agreed to the contents of the deal and it has now become an official document."

The U.S. military launched air strikes against suspected militia targets in the vast slum district of some two million people throughout the night, Iraqi medics and security officials said.

Cairo

Arab Actors considered Egyptian

Egypt for over half a century has been the heart of the Arabic Cinema, with the strongest in Africa and thge Middle East, it is only surpassed by India and China in Asia, the Egyptian Actors Union has lately decided that Arab actors are to participate in a certain number of work in Egyptian movies, but after protests by Egyptian members of the Union, the Union went to the extream other side, it decided to accept Arab (non-Egyptian) actors to be members in the Union, making it the first Union in the Arab world to do such move, several calls in other unions that work outside their countries are calling for the same move, the Egyptian Actors Union is proposed to be called Arab Actors Union instead.

I think this civil war started because everyone is interfering in Lebanon's affairs, thus creating internal pressure.

Yea the news here kept reporting it as "US backed Lebanon" against Hizbollah, and I couldn't help but thinking that we don't have any armed forces in Lebanon.
I didn't know we were backing a particular government in Lebanon, but obviously we'd be against Hizbollah. It seemed strange.

Which way in these elections do you think the christians(up to 40% of the pop) will vote?

How many MP's do they currently have, and which parties do the maronites belong to?

As they are as widely accepted around 40% of the population, what do you think will happen if Hizbollah gains more power?

Ps you did not answer my Khula question?
