MALIKI SNUBS KING
CAIRO, Egypt - Iraq’s Shiite leader was firm, his aides say — he would not talk to President Bush with Jordan’s Sunni king listening.
That startling show of mistrust in a neighbor led to a cancellation of a meeting between the three leaders Wednesday night and sent a cold shiver across the Middle East on Thursday, raising fears of a region-wide Sunni-Shiite split that the United States may be powerless to control and Iran could benefit from.
Please tell me that this is just a misunderstanding, if not things could get ugly.

Yet another story about the Snub of the King.
That startling show of mistrust in a neighbor led to a cancellation of a meeting between the three leaders Wednesday night and sent a cold shiver across the Middle East on Thursday, raising fears of a region-wide Sunni-Shiite split that the United States may be powerless to control and
Iran could benefit from.
Does not sound good. I think it was to try and appease Sadr, for the King is a Sunni.

That's interesting, especially since the news sems to be treating this as a snub to Bush after that nasty little memo about Maliki.
Very interesting. Not surprising though, in the way you report it. This guy has the power and he wants to keep it. If that means dissing the occasional king or even his patron saint, Bush, then so be it.

Politicians are so damn stupid.
I'm really starting to loose all faith in humanity.

I disagree. Who is it that consistently puts the bad politicians in power to begin with? Who never seems to "get it"? And WITHOUT "leaders" to control us we often end up like Iraq.
Time and time again, humanity has shown it WANTS to be led, and time and time again it proves it not only can't lead itself at the local level or doesn't know enough, or doesn't care enough about selecting PROPER leaders.
Most dictatorships are supported at first by the very people who become enslaved by them.
Humanity sucks.

Its not so easy as you draw it here.
Maliki stands on a damn difficult position, if he wants to prevent the immediate shisma of and failure of the federal government, which could easily grow to civil war, he has no other chance than chancel the Bush meeting.
The situation in Iraq gets more an more explosive each day.

I am aware of that. I was just addressing the most obvious point. On the other issues, Maliki knows the US is not a very popular country over there and eventually we will be gone, leaving him to explain to everyone why he was in bed with us. He MUST make every effort to appear to be his own man and not a puppet of the Americans for his own survival.
And as for my first point, in my opinion NO ONE rises to the position of national leader unless they want it very, VERY much. I don't believe ANY head of state will sacrifice himself even if doing so is in the best interests of the nation he rules.
Whatever dance this guy does in the next few years will be purely how best to keep his position FIRST and to bring Iraq peacefully into the 21st century second.
