Zimbabwe, an crises both forgotten and ignored

I have family in Zim, and spoke to my mother's aunt today. It is terrible. No food. No money. Inlfation at 1400%. No petrol. People without homes because the president had his little 'clean up' recently. 1400 people dying per week of HIV-AIDS (in a country of only 12 mil people).

The West says, hey, it is Africa's problem, and South Africa should solve it. For some strange obscure reason, South Africa's government says 'It is an internal problem in Zimbabwe, they should resolve it themselves' And Robert Mugabe shrugs and says 'What problem?'

Around 10 000 Zimbabweans cross the border into SA per month, yeah, we have the money and jobs to handle this!

But, on the other hand, what should we do? We do not want to harm the people on the ground anymore than they ar ealready suffering!

But I do have a thought, give me some advice on this - The Zimbabwean people should be made to see that they need to take urgent action against their government. Mugabe should also be shown as the incompotent evil fool he his.

80% of Zims Electricity comes from SA. They owe us almost a Billion rand already for this. We should just cut it. I know, I know it is the people who will suffer, the Presidential palace will still have power, Elctrical power that is. But for how long? Will the people stil sit and do nothing?

I am usually against sever intervention, and action that harms the inocents, but this is getting redicilous (and beats finding afake reason to invade)

If I am not mistaken, SA was in the fight against Mugabe, right? Back in the 80's? The older I get the few facts I can remember. But back to Mugabe, why do the people, if they are suffering so keep this govt in place? I know that the people are capable and willing to fight for what they want.

unfortunatly

Yes, the 'bad' South Africa fought him, not because of his policies, but because he was fighting Zimbabwe (then called Rhodesia)'s white government.

African loyalty is strange. He freed them, so many remain loyal to him. Also, never ever underestimate the power of a dictaotro to stay in place. The Iraq's did not get rid of Hussein.

Nobody is well paid in that country, except his army

Strange that, isn't it?

I understand completely and once it got free and dumped the white govt, were there not 2 different fsactions vying for control. Again, I apologize for my bad memory. But it would seem that loyalty can only go so far, when families start suffering it would be time to act for change.

Strange fact

Mugabe, for the fist ten yearts, was a good president. He said many things about working together and forgiveness loong before Nelson Mandela. He had no court case against the 'white government' and many of them still farmed in Zim untill a few months ago, including former Prime Minister Ian Smith. He was an example for Africa, and then all of a sudden, he just sorta went all crazy!

Strange is our presidents silence on the matter. Non-officially, this is because an younger may not critize an elder in public, in African culture. Therefor Mandela and Tutu does crtize, but Mbeki is silent.

A great example that sometimes culture is not good for us, and we should let tradition go in favour of logic from time to time

If he sorta went crazy, seems to be the symptons of a dictator. The ole say power corrupts, is probably one of the most profound statements very made. All we need to do is look at just about all countries for proof.

As far as logic goes, it scares me that humans, who are proud of their logical thinking, are seldom either, no thinking therefore no logic. And unfortunately, those who are logically thinking are sometimes label subversive, treasonous, and a wealth of bad labels.

HOPE--it would seem that a cleric is reading the roit act to Mbeki.

Business Day - News Worth Knowing

I think this quote was pretty much what you were speaking on.

“Mbeki has his own agendas, he knows there is a crisis in Zimbabwe, yet he continues to support Mugabe,” Ncube said.

coool

I see you found my favourite local newspaper, it is a good one o read down here, unfortunatly it oly apears weekly, but the online version is daily updated.

The problem is, as I have mentioned in another thread, he has found those allies, in China. Zimbabwe, when it comes to natural recources, is one of the richest countries in the world, it has basically everything except oil. (which is why no one is getting rid of Mugabe, maybe....)

So finding 'willing' partners is not toooo difficult

Nelson Mandela's prestige is such that he could get rid of Mugabe simply by urging the people to rise up against him.

Instead, Mandela supports Mugabe.
