CIA tracked Iran by Turkish Satelite

Short translation from turkish newspaper Sabah :
Turkey is officially protested by Iran for the CIA activities like electronic jamming, radio and TV broadcasting , tracking mobil phones and e-mails etc.. from Turkish satelite Turksat-2. In the protest, it is stated that the company that leased the satelite channels belong to CIA with proofs. Turkey didn't give any official reaction yet.
It is speculated that Iran has some counter measures against US satelite activities, so CIA would prefered to use Turksat.

1. I don't know about their technology but Turkey can jam satelite broadcasts bring Pkk propogandas to our Kurdish Ppl by military jammers in residental areas or by broadcasts from the same channel.
2. There could be areas out of coverage.
3. US could want to disturb Turkish - Iran coorperation on kurdish issue.

No , article defines the activities as radio and TV broadcasting , tracking mobil phones and e-mails, not taking pictures since it is a commercial satelite not a spy satelite. Taking pictures can not be jammed and I am sure US is already doing that by their satelites, but others can be .

A quote from Pro-PKK website about how Turkey blocks Pro-PKK broadcasts.:

Quote:
Unconfirmed reports have stated that the Turkish Government appears to have cut off access to the station by jamming satellite signals. The signal has been completely blocked off in several cities throughout Northern Kurdistan such as Elih (Batman), Riha (Sanli-Urfa), Culemerg (Hakkari), Veransher and Gever (Yusekova). Other cities in both Kurdistan and western Turkey, such as Istanbul and Izmir, have reportedly been experiencing very bad signals in the past week. Experts claim that jamming transponders on a commercial satellite is a relatively easy thing to do with the available modern technology. Such a method effectively blocks satellite signals and disallows viewers from watching satellite stations cut off.

Anti-US sentiment is still dominant in public, but our statesmen and speacially Military are loyal to their alliances, they think temporary sentiments shouldn't effect a long time alliances such as Turkish-USA which is right. Just a few years ago, relations was on top when Clinton visited earthquake survivors in Turkey, Mr. Clinton was more popular than our own president. Our ppl are too sentimental, a few small gestures can change their view. Only such things below (Mr.Clinton with a earthquake survivor child) made Clinton most popular men in the country in that era.

Meanwhile , the key factor that effects public sentiment is Northern Iraq. Ppl watch the funerals of martyrs on the news and they are informed that those murderers, PKK terrorists come from northern Iraq which is under American authority. Also TV news full of stuff about oppression to Turkomans in northern Iraq. On the other hand, a stronger and nuclear Iran is not in our national interests.

Yes, Turkey is the second biggest F-16 user after USA and is a part of JSF project. EU puts pressure for Eurofighter with political blackmails but military chiefs are insist on JSF.
I think , both side's administrations are misfortune for both countries, at least for relations. It looks Mr. Bush is replacing his team with ret.Gen.Scowcroft's (ex. national security advisor to his father) team , He is also the head of Turkish-American Business Council. So I am optimistic about developments.
Because there are and will be much more oppurtunities for coorperation than the current state since from Balkans to Caucasia, from Ukraine to M.East and Iran, Central Asia and Azerbaijan, Turkey has borders or close ties to all those regions which are closely related with American insterests.

Turkey's secular structure is more strong than it seems from abroad, I have a lot of satelite dishes, cable TV etc.. I don't know why but most of foriegn TVs only dare to show veiled women, backward ppl etc.. from Turkey which are not such common on the streets, just yesterday more than 1 million ppl attend to funeral of ex. Pm in Ankara and turned to funeral to an anti-islamist marching, Army also very strict on secularism and also such arabic lifestyle is not suitable for Turks, youth is mad about dancing drinking partying , but we have wealth and wealth distribution problem, those who don't have access to partying, clubs etc.. because of poverty (loosers like you said) could turn to fanatic islamic way. Also what is happening on the world surely effect Turkey. Welath is the cure to backwardness. US could promote trade with Turkey, Turkish-US trade volume (Two way trade) is only 3,5 billion $(most of it US weapon sales) while Turkish-Russian trade volume is 21 billion $. For ex. US action on Iraq cost us trade cut off with Iraq worth of billions of $, it caused poverty in our S.E. region and it means more backwardness such as fanatism.

But contrary what you fear, youth in Iran want to live like their turkish counterpartners, they are watching turkish satelite channels, they are sun bathing in Turkish coasts with bikinis. Iranian girls, women who visit Turkey throw out their veils as soon as they pass the border. So Turkey influence on them more than they influence on Turkey. And one of my friend who just back from Iran expressed his observations on ppl, specially youth about the change and will of change and said that Iran won't be the same just 5 or 10 years later.

Just a small chart about the meaning of secularism, Turkey does 3 to 5 times better than oil rich countries.
