The opposition to the US occupation by Shiites and Sunnis alike is not based upon religion and never has been. While the Shiites and Sunnis do have different religious agendas those differences are NOT the reasons behind their attacks on US forces in Iraq. If anything, the opposition to the US occupation has provided common ground to the Shiites and Sunnis that oppose it.
So while you might hear of a bombing of a Shiite mosque and consider that a religious issue when a US convoy is attacked or mortar rounds being launched into the green zone it has absolutely nothing to do with religious beliefs. It is based solely upon the US occupation of Iraq and nothing else.
