I hate to have reveal how retarded I am, but I can't remember
how to upload my avatar from "My Pictures". Would some kind
soul please tell me the clicks?

-click on UserCP on the left side of menu on top
-choose the option "edit avatar" in the vertical menu on the left
then you should find at the bottom the button where you can upload from your computer.

Note: The maximum size of your custom image is 150 by 150 pixels or 48.8 KB (whichever is smaller).

Thanks, but it's the upload part I have forgotten.
What and how do I copy from "My Pictures"? I know
if I click "Browse" on the CP custom Avatar line I get
a screen with "my Pictures" where the avatar is.
The next step escapes me.

You click on the picture you want to have as avatar (it has to smaller than the max specifications and has to have one of the common picture formats). Just confirm your choice by double click on it or by choosing it and than click on "open". After that simply click on the page at "save changes". Voila.

Thank you again, but after going through this
I get a message from this board saying:
"This JPEG image has the incorrect file extension."
Do you have any ideas on gettig around that?
(My avatar size looks OK)

Hm, if the size is not the problem I would try to open the picture in question with the graphic program of your choice and save it as JPEG as a new file. JPEGs normally work.

Thanks, I'll keep mucking around. My old computer crashed and I am still trying to find my way around the present bare bones replacement.

if your picture size is Ok(to know its size,you can move your mouse to the picture,don't click it,2 seconds later,it will show you a dilogue to tell you the picture's size).
if not or the picture more than 19K,then do like this,I think your PC OS is Windows XP, run "Paint" programe to edit this picture.save as "JPG",
or save as "Gif","Gif" format will lose some color,
