Captain America is Dead.

Quote:
Comic book hero Captain America dies

NEW YORK - Captain America has undertaken his last mission — at least for now. The venerable superhero is killed in the issue of his namesake comic that hit stands Wednesday, the Daily News reported.

On the new edition's pages, a sniper shoots down the shield-wielding hero as he leaves a courthouse, according to the newspaper.

It ends a long run for the stars-and-stripes-wearing character, created in 1941 to incarnate patriotic feeling during World War II. Over the years, an estimated 210 million copies of "Captain America" comic books, published by New York-based Marvel Entertainment Inc., have been sold in a total of 75 countries.

But resurrections are not unknown in the world of comics, and Marvel Entertainment editor in chief Joe Quesada said a Captain America comeback wasn't impossible.

Still, the character's death came as a blow to co-creator Joe Simon.

"We really need him now," said Simon, 93, who worked with artist Jack Kirby to devise Captain America as a foe for Adolf Hitler.

According to the comic, the superhero was spawned when a scrawny arts student named Steve Rogers, ineligible for the army because of his poor health but eager to serve his country, agreed to a "Super Soldier Serum" injection. The substance made him a paragon of physical perfection, armed only with his shield, his strength, his smarts and a command of martial arts.

In the comic-book universe, death is not always final. But even if Captain America turns out to have met his end in print, he may not disappear entirely: Marvel has said it is developing a Captain America movie.

I'm not sure why they would do this. The creator seems pretty upset. He was a unifier when we needed one. Granted comics are not as mainstream as they used to be, but I still kind of feel that this was an inopportune time to have a sniper shoot CAPTAIN AMERICA repeatedly

I thought Captain America was pretty lame... of all the comic book heroes out there. Too bad his creator is upset though.

He was kind of lame, but..... still..... at least he wasn't aqua man.
It is kind of along the lines of if they came out and said that GI Joe was sniped or something. Or if they came out and said something bad about hot dogs and baseball. Well, this probably doesn't make any sense. Oh well.

Yeah, they could replace his red white and blue out fit with a brooks brothers suit lined with oil for food money, and replace his shield with a stack of resolutions and ineffective santions.

Captain Britain was better then Captain America. And even then... he wasn't that great. I think people only tolerated having him in Excalibur because his girlfriend was a minx!

Chances are good you're not sure why they did it because you aren't reading comics right now. They don't do this shit in a vaccuum, "Oh, let's snipe Capt. America for no good reason."

I haven't been keeping up with the Civil War storyline, but I'd be shocked if this didn't have something to do with it. The premise is that there are two factions (with poor SPiderman stuck in the middle) of super heroes divided over a new piece of legislation recently passed by the United States government requiring superhumans to register with the government and divulge their secret identities. Captain America and his half were for the law and registration, and Iron Man and his half were against it.

Like I said, I haven't kept up with it (hard to find American comics in Taipei) but I'm reasonably sure that his death has something to do with it.

But then I'm not exactly surprised to find incomplete and sensationalist reporting on a fringe topic from the American News Media. Yeah, Captain America's dead, never mind why. Thanks for the scoop, guys.

Granted, and I thought the same thing at first. Then they came out and said he was not coming back. I do read comics. Not nearly like I used to and I haven't bought one in over two years, but I'm familiar. When they do shit like this it is usually because of whoever is doing the writting and what he/she wants to do with it. Well, after that writer has killed off Cyclops, Mary Jane, the Human torch, or whoever a new writer takes over gets everything back on track and makes the past how ever many months all a dream, or vision, acid trip, etc.

I just get frustrated because at first it was the Superman movie where they changed it to "truth, justice, and all that stuff" instead of "t, j, and the american way." And now it is "A sniper has killed Captain America." A frig'in sniper? That is just weak.

On a side note, I saw an issue of that civil war series and flipped through it. It looks pretty decent. Might get me back into reading them.

He could be back. They killed Superman. They killed Optimus Prime. Both came back.
