The Iraq War Movies
THought this was an interesting idea, so i watched all of them and went over what each one was like from my perspective. would be interested in what others thought of each one and if my perspective since i have fought in these wars are skewed and off the mark here are my takes on the movies:
In the Valley Of Elah
This one was based on a true story which i didnt know at the time of its release. Rented it cause it only lasted in the theater for like a month. Thought it was a little over the top on the portrayal of soldiers in general, and i thought the topic of course, due to my bias, was a piss poor reason to make a movie. IN the end it stayed to the actuall events and only offered a few moments of pontificatoin about the war in general. This one i gave a C cause i really liked the actors and in the end it was based on a true story.
Redacted
Never made the theater in a military town as can be expected. Took one month to rent it for there was only one copy at the Hastings i rent at and it seemed to be out all the time or lost in the building . This was the most over the top, every bad incident that happened in iraq, all happens as the norm and it happened in one squad . It portrays no leadership what so ever , there is never any platoon sergeants nor officers ever seen in the movie ever really giving any direction. The actions of these fucks were deplorable, but they went rouge at the last minute not the whole time and the movie portrays that , from day one these guys were totally out of control. In the end it was a hard movie to watch for it was poorly made in concept cause it was trying to be a documentary but its footage actually made you nauseous and was really disconjoined. Then at the end this one it ended with a picture slide show to opera music with every horrible shot of a civilian casualty in iraq, most from suicide bombers, but labeled as US collateral damage. This movie in content was so biased Micheal Moore would be embarrassed, and its whole concept was fucking retarded and poorly advanced, i gave it a F and my wife couldnt even finish it for it was so amaturish she left the room.
STOP LOSS
Just saw it in the theater today, I had to get to it fast for it is doing terrible in a military town and i wanted to see this one most of all for i think the content is something important. THis movie moved me, i had guys that were stop lossed and i believe the program is wrong and hate that guys are over there all the time dieing when they shouldnt be there. The war footage in this one was the most accurate i have seen in a movie of late and i actually found myself flinching a few times for it kind of was too real. The cast was really good and they really came across as soldiers, which the rest really lacked IMO , the believability factor was there in this movie. THe end made me really feel moved, the decision to fight for his soldiers and his courage and bravery was nicely mixed with a goodbye formation that is totally hollywood for you dont see your family. Think this one represented soldiers well, showed the human element and brought a great amount of statistics with it from the 650K and counting soldiers who have served, of that 80K that have been stop lossed, and the lack of statistics of how many have died. This one gets an A i will buy this when it comes out and i think americans should flock to this movie more, it brings up a problem that is still on going which is fighting a war with a populace that doesnt support it , and it also shows the courage and valor of those who step up and heed the call .
Gave this one a B+ was a good move IMO
LIONS FOR LAMBS
You know at first with the actors assembled for this i thought, this is gonna be the usuall, alot of everything bad that has happened in iraq lumped into one film, with soldiers all acting likesome on her portrays them daily on here, as back stabbing rapist blah blah blah
this was a really good movie, first of all the only political criticism i could find was actually in the "Making of" on the special features, when redford spoke of this is something i find interesting in "my country". And of course i remembered his words in 2004 when he spoke of moving to ireland since america voted in bush. BUT he made a really good movie.
THe republican politician played by cruise and streep the reporter is an interesting dual, a deep blue liberal vs a repub. The teacher pushing kids to get their heads out of their asses and do SOMETHING either for or agianst or even nuetral dueling and the soldiers who are played well and represented with respect i thought in their life or death struggle while all this goes on is quite a backdrop to what is really happening in the country .
thought the apathy of the populace is dead on , the reporters trying to redeem themselves after the Iraq selling is dead on, and the soldiers just trying to win the war was dead on.
For those that dont dig the players get past it , rent this movie and give it a watch i think it is up there with Babel and Syriana for really good politico movies that keep your attention and make you think.
B- was off the mark on a few things, and they let streep push her political agenda a little much(in the making of they speak of letting her freelance with the script)
