Pinochet escapes justice - Political Forum

General Augusto Pinochet, who overthrew Chile's democratically elected Marxist president in a bloody coup and ruled this Andean nation for 17 years, died Sunday at age 91, dashing victims' hopes he would be brought to justice.

Some celebrate some mourn--either wat the SOB is dead!

He has never had to stand trial or regretted anything for the thousands of dead, tortured , dissappeared and exiled under his reign. THAT is a pain in the ass.

I heard a report on NPR this morning that he had stood some sort of limited trial, and was under house arrest.

From what I've read....he had the same objectives as most nations in the west.

free trade, capitalism, emancipation, universal suffrage.

He combatted communism with a iron fist there is NO doubt about that...killing ALL of his opponents after his Coup, which was supported by the US and CIA.

If there was only a dictator like that we could prop up in Iraq.

THere was, we whacked him. But he was our dictator. Emancipation and universal suferage--then why so many women in prison for wanting to praction a form of democracy? Even the prresent prez of Chile was one of his victims.

An interesting piece on Pinochet

Perhaps it is fitting that Augusto Pinochet died on international human rights day. I remember the day he was arrested in London, because it was at the same time as a conference that my team had organised to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which was proclaimed at the United Nations on December 10 1948.

SANTIAGO, Chile - In a letter to Chileans written to be published after his death, Gen. Augusto Pinochet said he wished he had not had to stage the bloody 1973 coup that put him in power, and called the abuses under his long regime inevitable.

His fate was public shunning and unimagined loneliness, he said in the message made public Sunday.

The former dictator, who died Dec. 10 of heart failure at age 91, insisted the military takeover avoided civil war and a Marxist dictatorship, and said his 1973-90 regime never had ''an institutional plan'' to abuse human rights.

''But it was necessary to act with maximum rigor to avoid a widening of the conflict,'' Pinochet wrote
