UN votes to end Cuba Embargo
BBC NEWS | World | Americas | UN urges US to end Cuba embargo
Quote:
The UN General Assembly has voted for a 16th consecutive year to recommend that the US ends its trade embargo on Cuba, imposed more than four decades ago.
The resolution is non-binding and previous resolutions have had no effect on US policy.
The 192-member General Assembly passed the measure by 184 votes to four, with one abstention.
The vote comes shortly after US President George W Bush reaffirmed that the US embargo would remain in place.
The US, Israel, Palau, and the Marshall Islands voted against repealing the embargo, while Micronesia abstained.
Last year's resolution was passed by 183 votes to four, also with one abstention.
The document calls on the US to end its economic, commercial and financial embargo against Cuba "as soon as possible", in line with the UN charter and international law.
Cuba's foreign minister Felipe Perez Roque told the General Assembly ahead of the vote that the US blockade had been enforced more fiercely than ever over the last year.
But in a speech last week President Bush said the US would maintain its embargo as long as the government in Cuba keeps a "monopoly" on power.
|
What a shock the Israeli's voting with the US, you would never have guessed. The whole world knows the embargo is wrong, apart from two rogue states and two others i didn't even know existed. And what a comment from Bush about the Cuban government having a monopoly of power. He would rather return to the days when the US had a monopoly of power in Cuba.

A worldwide embargo on the US might be not such a bad idea. It would maybe teach them a lesson

Bring it on.
Like the UN is going to do anything. I bet that if they were somehow making money off of the embargo they wouldn't care. Too bad we can't run a food for oil program with them.

No-one is suggesting they will. I just think if you had it done to you, your minds would soon be changed.
However I do feel that countries who oppose the embargo, imperialism and US dominance ought to stop dealing with your government. Chavez should turn off the tap (as he will if you invade Iran) and other states should follow by hurting the US economy however they can. That might just be what is needed to bring it down to earth and make it behave like a normal country.

Well i would suggest that some of them are. You have to get what Cuba provided you with from somewhere.
But you know sometimes, just occasionally, in the rest of the world we put principles and people before profits.

Or can the Us just be consistent, and put full embargo's against all countries where regimes have a monopoly on power. Let's start with Saudi Arabia and Pakistan.

Ha. That would be the day.
The UN voted on a non-binding resolution....lol. Can someone please tell me, why bother voting on something that is not binding? It is nothing but a dictatorial sideshow. Non-binding....lol. Way to go UN, you show your impotence again. Someone give the UN some Viagra!

Of course it's non-binding you cant force the most powerful bully in the world to do something they dont want. It's just a reminder that the world condemns you. We may not be able to stop you but we can at least let it be known that we don't agree

Actually debating is what the UN should be focused on. The problem isn't the debates but countries like the US that ignore any debate that does not support the Imperialistic agenda of the United States. Logical arguments were presented to support the reasoning of the members of the UN prior to this vote. The problem is the arrogance of the US government to ignore logic.
