Chavez Holds Big Lead
Venezuela's fiery President Hugo Chavez could be headed for a sweeping victory in the country's upcoming elections with a US-based pollster giving him a 29-point lead over his rival.
Would say that his opponent is making a pathetic showing. Why is that?
If he is so unpopular, should there not be a better showing by his opponent?

I thought the US was buying influence by backing some opponenets? I would say , the money was not well spent, if true.

He's doing better than he was a few months ago. A few months ago, no one was even certain Chavez even had an opponent.

MIAMI - In President Hugo Chavez's Venezuela, there are signs of a maturing revolution: At a recent rally, young supporters who have spent a good part of their youth with Chavez in power sang with the elder Chavistas revolutionary favorites like "Uh Ah, Chavez no se va" - the "Chavez will not go" jingle popularized during his defeat of a recall referendum in 2004.
A Chavez win would push his socialistic agenda.

Chavez seems to gather more support from being anti-U.S. than anything he has accomplished for the poor. The middle class seems to be his biggest opponents. He offers hope but he fails to deliver.
I look for a coup to remove him from power.

Well Chavez will probably win. One hopes that he can get Venezuela's economy moving again. It doesn't seem to have gained much ground during his administration. Even the improvement of the poor has only been marginal. I think that Chavez has not been a good manager of Venezuela's economy.
That's because he makes George Bush look smart. The guy doesn't show any inclination to learn about economic realities.
He will probably win, but if he pushes too hard he may end up with a civil war. There are a couple of provinces in Venezuela that are pro-free markets who have demanded more autonomy.

I agree. I think he will win. If the vote is close he has enough influence to tip the scales in his favor, but his troubles won't be over.

Even if Chavez wins, it doesn't mean he's elected all powerful Glorious Leader. Chavez still has to live under the rule of law.

If a coup happens, the same instigators of coups around the world will be at the heart of it. The US.

You know, sometimes a coup happens because of internal pressures. Actually, coups ALWAYS happen because of internal pressures. The US nor any other country has ever been able to create a coup out of nothing. All we can do is support the faction carrying out the coup, and usually only with moral support.
