Yes it seems they are doing indeed as you say.
Even though the EU-South America summit half a year ago showed that the European quarrels really seem to disappear when compared to the level of disputes within the South American countries...
There clearly is a potential of tensions between those countries like Brazil who follow a moderate left agenda with populist far left regimes like the one Venezuela. Not to talk about possible conservative governments.
But it seems quite clear, to have a stand in the future, South America needs to join up forces. Not at least to defend sovereignty against the US. As its not really a secret what the US thinks about Latin American sovereignty in general...
