Nicaraguan election today

Ortega leads in the polls, but probably won't win the first round. If he doesn't win the first round, he probably won't win a runoff.

However, he does have a chance this time around. Any thoughts?

Ortega wins--does that mean another bs conflict in the area?

Not unless he tries to subvert Nicaragua's democracy. Here's his constraints:

1) A legislature not in his party's hands.
2) He can only serve one five-year term.

As long as he doesn't try to abolish congress or change the constitution to extend his Presidency, there won't be any problems.

Ortega seems to me to be a completely changed man. His victory speech was very conciliatory to the majority of the country who did not vote for him.

Again, he is a politician and must travel whichever way the political winds blow. If he is not concilatory we may have another front on the war on terror.

Chavez is a politician as well, but he doesn't mind alienating half the country.

Revolutionaries don't tend to care much about public opinion. Ortega is apparently no longer a revolutionary.
