We must stop mexico city from doing this it's absurd

Mexico City considers legal prostitution

MEXICO CITY - The leftist party that has already legalized gay unions and abortion in Mexico City said Wednesday it wants to make prostitution legal in the capital of this overwhelmingly Roman Catholic country.

Mexico City legislator Juan Bustos of the Democratic Revolution Party, who submitted the bill on Tuesday, said the move is necessary to protect prostitutes from abuse and regulate the sex industry.

Corrupt police frequently use the current law not to arrest sex workers but as a threat to shake them down for bribes or sexual favors.

"These are issues that we are going to bring forward as part of a political platform, because we feel it is part of our duty to society," Bustos said Wednesday.

However, he expects opposition. Spokesmen for the Roman Catholic church, which led marches against the abortion bill approved in April, were not immediately available for comment.

But President Felipe Calderon's conservative National Action Party said it had problems with aspects of the bill and that the goal should be to get women out of prostitution.

"We have to discourage this (prostitution), so that more women will not even think about becoming sex workers," said Mariana Gomez del Campo, head of National Action in Mexico City. "We have to try to recover values."

In most Mexican cities, prostitution is considered the equivalent of a misdemeanor. In Mexico City, it is punishable by 12 to 24 hours in jail and fines equal to about $51 to $93.

Some cities have informal red-light zones where prostitution is tolerated, such as the border city of Nuevo Laredo. But none appear to have gone as far as the Mexico City proposal, said Carolina Velazquez of Mexico's Women's Information Center.

The bill would legalize prostitution in designated areas at least roughly 1,000 feet from schools, parks, churches and apartment complexes, though pimping would remain a crime. It also would require prostitutes to adhere to health standards or face punishments similar to those under the current law.

The new law would guarantee prostitutes' rights and make them eligible for government services, Bustos said.

WTF?? Why on Earth does something like this going on in Mexico City get you so bent out of shape? Were you frightened by a whore when you were a baby or what?

So they have hookers, big friggin deal. There have been prostitutes since the time of Jesus and before, and there will be prostitutes until the end of mankind.
I think we ought to follow their lead. It's a victimless crime.

And do us all a favor. When you copy and paste something for your pointless rants, please at least take out the "ADVERTISEMENT" placeholder.

First of all, Wolfman, I don't think you are Mexican, right? So, if they decide to it, what is it to you??

Secondly, I am for legalising prostitution. With the huge HIV in our country, I think it is necesary, so that beter controll is done. In all cities, in all countries, prostitution is a fact of life. All the laws in all the books in the world has not managed to stop it now for a few millennium, so currently, it happens, without any way to monitor it.

But, if you have a counsil for them, where they have to register, and certain laws they have to adhere to, like having regular STD tests, etc. then one can begin make it safer.

Also, many of these women are viictims of crimes by their clients, who rob and besat them. But they feel they can not go to the police, as they themselves might be arrested. Legalising it, will help these women.

Then don't do it.

I don't necessarily think prostitution is a good thing, but legal prostitution is certainly a better solution than illegal prostitution. It's going to proliferate regardless.

Good luck with that one... Not only are many Africans worse off than dirt poor, but they lack the most basic knowledge concerning AIDs.

What you going to do next ban the drugs in Amsterdam?
Man, you want to work on problems I think you might look toward Washington D.C. that might keep you busy for awhile.
Besides, if you've ever been to any town along the Mexican border.
Prostitution may not be legal but it sure is booming and cops ain't doing that much to stop it.

In the context of Mexico, they're only concerned with the flow of U.S. dollars south via their GD illegal immigrants in the United States. Quite frankly, I think we ought to annex all of Mexico. Hell, we already have 10% of their people, we ought to have the real estate too.
