The Federal Government think this is important and will give money to Provinces in grants if they include this in school program. So, many Provinces are doing this. When the Ministre of Education introduce this issue, many parents did not object. I wish they would have objected because Russian is a difficult language. Catholique schools in Québec have Latin and Greek as 2nd language. This is perhaps more difficult.

Da! Because the quebequois already know French and it's too cold for the Mexicans? j/k (:
It's probably more useful than latin/greek for non-scientists... but why not German, why not Chinese?

About twice as many people wordlwide speak Russian compared to German, therefore that's your answer as to "why not German".
Why not Chinese is interesting though. Considering it's set to have such a huge importance in the future, I think every country should start gearing up to teach Chinese in schools.
Generally speaking, you should be looking to learn languages of countries that are more developed or less developed than your own. English is the most versatile languag,e of course, but in terms of what I mentioned there, Russian doesn't seema bad choice. Neither does Chinese. Germany however is similarly developed to Canada, so it doesn't really provide too many new possibilities in terms of work...just my take on it.

Well, i thought that English was the main language in Canada, and that they learned French as their second language mainly, apart from areas around Quebec that speak mainly French.
And over here in Britain, i go to a language specialist school, and the main 3 languages are French, Spanish and German, and then the other 3 minor languages you can take for GCSE are Chinese, Russian and Polish.

I don't think this is true because it doesn't make a lot of sense. Our first language (outside of Quebec) is English, and the second is French. Those are the main languages taught in all major Canadian schools, and after that Spanish is taught in a lot of high schools, and Greek, Hebrew, Latin, Arab, Italian, Russian, and German are all common in universities. I don't see why Russian would gain any standing over other languages.

Russian is one of the languages i'd like to learn...
It's extremely hard though... every word has 16 different forms or so...
