I would highly advise against any territory joining the United States until such a time as a process for a State to leave the Union is established. That is something we, the United States, are lacking in our Constitution. If a State wants to leave the union then how is that accomplished without revolution?

Only idiots would enter into a contract without an "escape" clause.

Armed struggle against whom? If asked many citizens of the U.S. would not know what the status of Puerto Rico is. And, if told that Puerto Rico wanted to become independent, they would not care.

I have been Following this struggle for more years than most of the posters here have been alive. How many of you know that Puerto Rican separatists fired on congress from the visitor's balcony in the 1950's. And, fired a mortar at the U.N. building a few years later? This struggle has been going on for many years. I have garnered the impression that the major barrier to Puerto Rican Independence is not the U.S., but the fact that the Puerto Ricans themselves are too evenly divided on what they want. About half want Independence, the other half want to stay as a protected territory.

If most wanted Independence, they would have it by now. The fight is an internal struggle. Figure it out, and then tell us what you want.

PR has a pretty good deal going for itself. Being a part of the world super power is a benefit unto its own. I think it'd be in PR's best interest to keep things the way they are, neither persuing statehood nor independance. I can't believe that any Puerto Rican would actually want independance. If the majority really wanted it though, I'd support it as long as the seperation from the US was a peaceful one. I just hope they know what they're asking for!

Amigo....I can asure you that you donīt need or want to be independent for now.....maybe you could have been 50 years ago but with world economics as they are you are better as you are. The US $ is in a down lump right now but I would not put it for grabs yet, we also use the dollar and it will go up as it always has done......why do people look for more problems than what they have???...You have a "state like legislature" donīt you?, change your local laws. Donītry to be a "nationalist" like so many of us Latins, it does not work!!!!

Income tax?

I have recently learned that Puerto Ricans pay no income tax. What? Why would they want independence? I sure they qualify for welfare.
Minimum wage and no income tax = better than what lots of Americans have.
