The horrors of the Berlin Wall

Former eastern Germanys leaders still deny that they ordered soldiers to fire on men, women and children trying to flee the communist state. It is obvious that they did , and many, like eighteen year old Peter Fechter from Berlin in 1962 bled to death in the no-man´s land between the borders, since western german rescuers didn´t dare to make their way to them at the threat of eastern German guns.
But now a written order demanding refugees to be shot has been discovered and redirects public attention to the ugly face of the GDR.............

This is one part of history that I'd really like to read up on. I vaguely remember seeing it being torn down on the TV, but I was really young and have since, not really looked into what all was going on. I spend too much time reading fiction.

I must be really old, I remember the wall going up as well as it coming down. There are pictures burned into my memory of people trying to escape at the last minute...dropping from windows into the west, and a very famous one of a Volpo (East German Border Guard), throwing his rifle from his shoulder has he jumped over a strand of barbed wire to escape into the west. Another famous film where several young people make a dash across no mans land and a young woman snags her hair as she ducks under the wire (she made her escape successfully).

I haven't seen how the wall was built, and I haven't seen, how it came down (sadly).
I didn't know that these things are so unclear. It is clear for me....I thought it's proved that they have had the instruction to shot, because they shot so many....
People who are really annoying me are those who say the wall should build-up again. "Oh, the GDR wasn't that bad" "In the GDR it was better than in the FRG now" etc. etc. But those aren't just people from eastern Germany. There are also some in the west who think like this.
Some want this stupid wall back as a survey shows. I'm really angry about that.
Also films about the GDR are often more nostalgic, than to show the real "face" of the GDR.

There are still problems between East and West Germany, but it's better than this f**** wall, definitely.
