Your favorite Historical Moment
I think this will be an interesting discussion, as it may open up perspectives that nobody else had thought of before WRT to certain historical events. This one is on U.S. History, but I intend to do one on general World History as well.
Please name what you find to be the most interesting or intriguing United States Historical era or event, whether it be the Revolution, assasination of Lincoln, The Depression, the Civil War, Roaring Twenties, World War II, our current conflict in Iraq - or anything I've left off here!
Personally, I find the War of 1812 to be the most interesting. Significantly, it isn't too terribly important in comparison to other conflicts, but I do think the circumstances and events that took place are not only odd, but sometimes funny if you think about the terrible miscommunication that led to its start. The brink of war could have been avoided if messages would have been received sooner.

Watergate and Thermopylae were pretty cool… just off the top of my head. Thermopylae isn’t American history though…

The Mexican-American War was pretty funny. Most people don't believe such a war existed when I tell them (which is interesting, because that war brought my state into the Union.)
But from a serious perspective, Napoleon's coronation was my single favorite moment, followed by Caesar crossing the Rubicon. The rise and fall of the German and Japanese empires were my favorite periods, along with colonialism.

My favorite American historical period would probably be World War II. I just think that the bravery and resolve that our grandfathers, as young men, showed was beyond comparison. The music was pretty kick ass too.
World history wise, I would have to go with the Rennaissance and Baroque periods. But that is just because of the advances in and study of art that was going on.

Hindenberg
I have a fascination with the burning of the Hindenburg. Contrary to general perception, it did not cause the end of the zeppelin era; it was the last straw in a history of airship disasters. The Akron, Italia, California, etc. The technology of lighter than air travel was finally seen for what it was...a dead end.
Note that helium was not a factor that could have prevented the end of zeppelins.

Do not know what you mean. If you were aware of history, "lighter than air pleasure cruise liners" is what I was posting about. Germany and others had them before WWII. They also had military air ships during the First World War.

Mine has nothing to do with wars or battles, but with overcoming their results : the Fall of the Berlin wall in 1989, which i clearly remember.
