I was speaking with a co-worker yesterday who mentioned how his grandmother faithfully travels to New London, Texas for a yearly memorial. I had no idea where New London, Texas was, much less what tragedy took place over there. In short, there was a natural gas explosion that killed well over three hundred students and faculty back in 1937. It ranks as the worst public school disasters in U.S. history. As a result of this explosion, efforts were soon made to make natural gas more detectable by smell, since it is odorless.
It's just some interesting historical information that seems to be overshadowed by the Galveston Hurricane. So I thought I would share it with those of you who, like me, had never heard of it either.
