The members of the Bundestag, the german parliament, marked the 75th anniversary of the "Ermächtigungsgesetz" ("Empowerment"-law) that marked the final destruction of the democracy of the Weimar republic by the parliament itself and paved the way for the Nazi dictatorship.
Only the chairman of the Social Democrats , Otto Wels, dared to speak out against the law in front of Nazi MP´s and Hitler himself "You may take our lives, but you can´t take our honour". ( A recording of the speech exists)
As a result many social democrats died in concentration camps or fled into exile.
