I don't 'hate' the idea. The concept is very attractive in name and I'm sure it works very nicely in other countries. However, to compare the "grand paradise" of Universal Healthcare in European countries where the population is much smaller than ours and the respective cultures are incredibly different in regards to attitudes facing health and wellness (and don't forget costs and preservation) -- frankly, it sort of makes me laugh. Universal healthcare would be ineffective in a country such as this. It seizes money from the people or seizes time from doctors to provide the health care.
We do, however, need to find a way of providing suitable healthcare for those that are not as fortunate as us. A government insurance up to a premuim level maybe? How about providing a subsidy to HMO providers if they offer a limited service to the poor and needy that the gov't pays for? Leave the medical establishment all the same, our gov't will be the corporate underwriters for the uninsured (which they are anyway, just not efficiently).
Those aren't definitive plans that I would stamp my name on...just some ideas.
