Of course it is more sucessful to treat when detected early, which is what this is about. This is true for most cancers. One of teh labs here is working on developing a blood test for cancer- that would maybe even be able to tell the type of cancer.
As an aside- cats get pretty much the identical type of breast cancer that women do. I look at too much malignant neoplasia every day- just saw a chondrosarcome (malignant tumor of cartilage) in a dogs mouth, which was neat, because it is an unusual tumor in an unusual site, but sad. I'd rather have described a common, boring old benign gingival hyperplasia. It does not seem right to me that we can do all kinds of crazy technological stuff, but many types of cancer still have the same dismal survival rates they've had for the last 40 years.
