Maybe, but nobody is forced to drink them. I'd say it's the people that are unhealthy for making the unhealthy choice.

The sugar in sodas and many other products was replaced several years ago with "High Fructose Corn Syrup," ( a cheaper sweetener than Sugar). FYI, there are several "sugars", Sucrose (white sugar), Fructose( in corn syrup and fruits), Glucose (the end product in your blood).

The industries that formerly used sugar will certainly say that the change was made to corn syrup because fructose is better for us than sucrose. However, the most likely reason is that corn syrup is cheaper and being a liquid, is easier to meter in the manufacturing process than white sugar.

The caloric value is the same the taste is so much different that there are many people that object to the change. I have heard that there is still one state that mandates sugar instead of corn syrup in sodas and there are many people who will drive miles to buy their favorite soda in the bulk.

The difference in the taste of the white sugar product to corn syrup is easy to detect in a side-by-side taste comparison. Buy a top brand jelly or jam (corn syrup), get some home-made jelly or jam of the same berry, and taste them...You will see the difference. Even the top brands cannot compete with the home made, white sugar based products.

Also, note that home made products containing white sugar have been around many hundreds of years before the current problem with Americans being overweight.

I will spare you my tirade about the inclusion of poultry products into processed meats (hot dogs, bologna, other cold cut lunch meats).

Haven't heard that about a state, but I have heard that Mexican Coca Cola has cane sugar in it, and it's superior in taste.

From everything I've read High-fructose corn syrup is pretty bad on our system. Much worse than sucrose. Part of the reason is that HFCS doesn't trigger the satiation response as does sucrose. That is why, back in the old days, a 6 oz. coke was enough--you couldn't drink too much more of it, without getting full. However, with HFCS, you can easily drink 32 oz. of it without feeling full other than volume.
