Lack of sleep may be fueling obesity

Add lack of sleep to things that can make you fat

According to this article, a lack of sleep (the average amount needed being about 7.5 hours a night) can force people to make more unhealthy choices (though they eat a lesser amounts of calories). [Lack of sleep] also slows the metabolism of the people eating these things.

I've also read that this might be happening because sleep deprivation is disrupting hormones that regulate appetite.

I forget where I read a study on sleep but I remember that older peoples sleep hour requirements can be smaller. Down to 7 hrs, a day rather than the 7.5 to 8 required by younger people.

I wish I remembered where I read that and what was said to support this, but I do remember it. Because I wondered about it awhile ago and researched it. Kinda strange.

Yeah, we were taught that in nursing school. Caloric requirements and sleep average, they decrease with age. I guess I believe it, as my Dad these days gets about 6-6.5 hours of sleep per night on average (he's in his early 60s).

I can vouch for less sleep as people age. I seem to operate on about 6 hours sleep.I'm 51. The last couple of years seemed to be the turning point.

Short naps seem to work better for me than a long nights rest.

Yea, I'm still a pup.

Yeah, I seem to be fine on 6.5 - 7 depending on the way things have been going. I sleep more in winter too. I LOVE the summer and the long hours of light. Still, even in winter I wake up after 6.5 - 7. This coming is # 40 but I'm not doing birthdays anymore.

Scientific studies only represent the average but it may not represent each individual. I sleep for just 5 hours everyday and I'm perfectly fine--except that I didn't grow much . I once read that lack of sleep raises cholesterol concentrations too.
