I have been researching this subject and thiought I would get an opinion on it from thiose here.



The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) did not fundamentally change its mandate after the dissolution of the Warsaw Pact and the collapse of the Soviet Union. In the wake of the Cold War, NATO continued to expand. In 1999, before the NATO war against Yugoslavia, NATO expanded into Eastern Europe.

NATO is determined to expand its membership circle and to expand its mandate. Ultimately NATO is slated to become a global military force. Moreover, part of the objectives of NATO as a global military alliance is to ensure the “energy security” of its member states. What this signifies is the militarization of the world’s arteries, strategic pipeline routes, maritime traffic corridors used by oil tankers, and international waters.

Well, it's quite interesting... NATO was devised as a mutual defence pact against invasion. Do we think it appropriate that it should be "defending energy security?" That means entangling in all sorts of foreign engagements.

Maybe NATO might become the next UN. That may yet be a good thing because of the weakness of the UN. If america withdrew, it would most likely fold because of the lack of troops and lack of a superpower to give it some direction. It will eventually go by way of the League of Nations. They folded because they were unable to enforce their decisions.

I think Nato will expand futher , next candidates are Georgia and Azerbaijan. Than most probably it would try to jump to the other side of Caspian Sea "Central Asia."

I disagree, NATO was established as a counter weight to the USSR during to cold war to defend Europe. It was argued during the Afganistan war when NATO offered to fight with America that NATO would be ineffective outside Europe, It had helped in but never faught in any wars outside Europe.

NATO is one of several regonal "collective defense" organisations. In the East they have the Collective Security Treaty Organisation, in West Africa they have the Economic Community of West African States. NATO is a Europian + Western organisation it wouldn't amit say a middle eastern nation and its perpose seems to continue to be the defense of Europe. Im pretty sure the last active war faught through NATO was in the former Yugaslavia.
